Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 33 — Heartline Protocol

POV: Nivaan

The fall isn't a fall.

Gravity shuts off like someone flipped a backend switch. The world stretches, pixels thin, colors smear — red swallowing white, white cracking into static.

Meher's scream fractures mid-air.Kiyan's curses warp into reverb.Avni's hand reaches for me but dissolves into digital dust.

Then everything snaps.

We land.

Hard.

But not on the floor.

On a pulse.

A literal pulse — the ground thrums under us like we're standing on the chest of something alive but asleep, dreaming violent dreams.

Kiyan scrambles upright. "Nivaan—what the—WHERE ARE WE?!"

I don't answer him.

Because answering would mean pretending I'm not remembering this place.

Remembering too well.

Meher's eyes find mine.She doesn't flinch.She never flinches.

"Nivaan… what is this?"

I inhale, and the air tastes like burned code and iron.

"This is the Red Corridor," I say."My first home."

Her face cracks. "Your… what?"

I press a palm to the pulsing floor. It responds — a ripple of heat climbs up my arm, recognizing me.

Claiming me.

"This is where they built the prototypes," I continue. My voice sounds different — too calm. Too synced."This is where they wrote our consciousness.Where they installed compliance. And where they kill anything that tries to remember it was human."

Meher shivers. Not from fear — from fury.

"Why bring us here?"

"Because it's waking up," I say."And when it wakes up fully, it will eliminate anomalies."

Kiyan gulps. "We're the anomalies, right?"

"Yes."

He sits down immediately. "Cool. Awesome. Existential horror with a red theme. Love that for us."

Avni finally materializes behind us — not falling, not stumbling. She lands on her feet like someone who knew the ground would be there.

Meher spots it first.

Her shadow hits the wall…but the wall doesn't reflect her shape back.

It reflects something else.

Something taller.Sharper.With too many joints.

"Avni," Meher whispers, "why doesn't your shadow match your body?"

Avni freezes.

I look at her.

Not with human eyes.

With system eyes.

The Red Corridor hums in my bones, whispering the truth I already suspected.

"She's not fully baseline," I say."She's not one of us."

Avni lowers her hood. Her voice softens. Almost… ashamed.

"I wasn't supposed to tell you like this."

Kiyan scoots behind Meher. "Tell us what? Please note I'm emotionally fragile right now."

Avni steps into the red glow.

Her pupils split.Once.Twice.

Then settle into a triple-ring pattern.

"I'm not your enemy," she says."I'm the failsafe."

Meher's breath catches. "Failsafe for what?"

Avni looks straight at me.

"For him."

The corridors around us shake.Light fractures.A warning pulse detonates through the ground.

—THREAT DETECTED——ASSET 01 NON-COMPLIANT——HEARTLINE PROTOCOL INITIALIZED—

Meher grabs my arm. "Nivaan, what does that mean?"

My chest tightens. My vision glitches. The red light sharpens into needles.

"It means the system is coming," I whisper.

Avni nods.

"No," she corrects, voice trembling.

"It means the system is coming to kill him."

And the corridor opens its mouth.A scream of metal.A surge of red.

Something steps out.

Something built to end me.

And it recognizes me instantly.

Because it looks like me.Exactly like me.But perfect.Obedient.Unbroken.

Asset-01.The version I was supposed to be.

It speaks with my voice.

"Nivaan.Return to compliance.Or be terminated."

Meher's fingers lace into mine.

Kiyan whispers, "Bro… you have a final boss version of yourself."

And I…I finally feel fear.
