CHAPTER 68 — WHEN THE WORLD BREAKS QUIETLY

Elena didn't remember leaving the room.

She didn't remember how she crossed the corridor, how the heavy steel door slid shut behind her, or how her feet carried her through the mansion she had once thought of as a place of safety. All she knew was the roaring in her ears, the crushing pressure in her chest, and the single sentence replaying over and over in her mind like a curse.

Your father is alive.

Your father destroyed my family.

Her hands were trembling violently by the time she reached the bedroom. She pressed her palm against the doorframe, breathing hard, as though the air itself had turned against her. The walls felt closer, the ceiling lower, the entire world suddenly unfamiliar.

Her father.

The man whose grave she cried over.

The man whose photograph she still kept hidden away.

The man she had believed died a victim.

Alive.
