The sky above the Ash Wastes was not the clean, crystalline blue of Mount Korath. It was a suffocating, leaden ceiling of swirling volcanic dust, yellowed by high-altitude sulfur emissions and cut through by cold, biting mountain gales.
To the east, forty miles across a jagged expanse of black basalt ridges and deep, ash-filled dry lakes, the snow-covered peaks of Mount Korath rose like white teeth against the grey sky. But here, on the flat, desolate expanse of the Sicar Plateau, three thousand feet above the valley floor, the world felt dead, barren, and completely stripped of life.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A concussive shockwave tore through the low cloud layer, shaking the basalt deck of the plateau with a force that sent clouds of pale grey ash billowing hundreds of feet into the air.
At the northern edge of the Sicar Plateau, two miles from the hidden subterranean access shaft that led down into Sector 8, the Imperial landing zone had transformed into a fortress of dark iron and burning plasma.
Thirty massive, heavy-transport dropships belonging to the Imperial Seventh Armada—colossal, turtle-backed vessels two hundred yards long, constructed from multi-layered composite plating—sat anchored into the ash plain on six-foot hydraulic landing struts. Around them, hundreds of black-plate Imperial shock troops were busily laying down heavy iron perimeter tracks, assembling steam-driven trenching machines, and erecting sixty-foot modular iron gun towers.
At the center of the perimeter, resting on a massive, three-tiered reinforced steel firing bed, sat General Vane's primary siege weapon: the Sovereign's Hammer.
It was a monstrous piece of imperial artillery—a sixty-foot-long, double-barreled linear magnetic accelerator designed to fire superheated tungsten-carbide shells fitted with localized plasma cores. Its massive, three-foot-thick barrel, wrapped in glowing copper cooling jackets, was currently elevated at a thirty-five-degree angle, pointed straight across the valley toward the distant white peaks of Mount Korath.
Standing on the iron command platform at the base of the siege cannon, General Vane adjusted his high-magnification optical binoculars.
He was a tall, lean man in his late fifties, his dark grey uniform crisp, unwrinkled, and completely free of ash despite the bitter gale. His face was a mask of cold, severe angles, scarred along his left jawline by an old plasma burn from the Southern Campaigns. On his shoulders sat the heavy, double-gold epaulets of an Imperial High General, and at his belt hung an ornate, ivory-handled officer's saber alongside a high-capacity plasma sidearm.
"Targeting array lock status?" Vane asked. His voice was quiet, dry, and raspy, carrying the cold, unhurried cadence of a surgeon conducting an autopsy.
Beside him, an Imperial targeting officer tapped a series of brass keys on a sloped copper console. "Primary optics locked on the high ridge at Gate Zero, General. Atmospheric density readings are compiled. Main energy capacitors are at eighty-eight percent charge. We will be ready for first trial fire in twelve minutes."
Vane lowered his binoculars, a faint, razor-thin smile touching his scarred jawline.
"Fleet Commander Marcus is a coward, Captain," Vane said, his cold, grey eyes looking out over the empty ash plains toward the distant mountain. "He saw a localized acoustic shield and panicked like a green recruit. He thought he was facing an ancient alien god. He didn't understand that every energy shield—no matter how advanced—is simply a matter of thermal capacity."
He reached out, resting his gloved hand against the vibrating copper cooling jacket of the sixty-foot cannon.
"We fire twenty high-density plasma shells into that same ridge," Vane continued calmly. "We dump fifty thousand degrees of thermal stress onto their kinetic plates in less than sixty seconds. The basalt beneath their anchor pins will turn to liquid glass, their copper grounding leads will melt, and their precious shield will collapse like a wet paper lantern."
"And the civilians in the lower sectors, General?" the officer asked quietly.
General Vane didn't turn his head. "There are no civilians in a rebellious zone, Captain. Only enemy assets waiting for liquidation."
A sharp, high-pitched alarm suddenly shrieked from the primary perimeter radar console.
SCREEECH! SCREEECH! SCREEECH!
The targeting officer froze, his fingers hovering over his console as the quartz screen flashed a violent, pulsing crimson hue.
"GENERAL!" the officer shouted, his voice losing all its disciplined composure. "HIGH-DENSITY SEISMIC AND ACOUSTIC CONTACTS! REAR PERIMETER! DISTANCE: TWO THOUSAND YARDS!"
General Vane turned on his heel, his dark coat whipping in the cold wind as he raised his binoculars back to his eyes, spinning toward the southern horizon of the plateau.
"Type and scale?" Vane demanded, his voice remaining level, though his scarred jaw tightened sharply.
"It's... it's not an atmospheric contact, sir!" the technician stammered, staring at the sweep-dial with wide, disbelieving eyes. "The signals are rising straight out of the ground! Depth: zero! QUANTITY: FORTY... NO, SIXTY LARGE-SCALE HEAVY CONTACTS! THEY'RE MOVING AT THIRTY MILES AN HOUR THROUGH THE ASH!"
The Eruption from the Ash
Two thousand yards south of the Imperial perimeter, where a vast, flat dry lake of grey volcanic ash stretched for three miles, the ground suddenly began to boil.
It wasn't a geothermal geyser.
The two-inch layer of grey dust rose into thirty-foot geysers of pale powder as the hidden, iron-reinforced hydraulic trapdoors of the ancient Selar transit shafts blew open simultaneously across the plain.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
From the dark, yawning mouths of the shafts, thirty-foot Class-Four Siege Sentinels erupted into the cold daylight, their four massive, bronze-plated legs slamming onto the hard basalt deck of the plateau with a thunderous THUD-THUD-THUD that shook the ash from the surrounding cliffs.
At the absolute center of the vanguard column, standing atop the broad, iron-plated shoulders of Unit 01, stood Danial Vance.
His dark wool tunic was whipped by the howling ash wind, his bare left arm extended toward the Imperial perimeter, the Gold Mark burning with a brilliant, blinding golden glare that cut through the grey fog like a flare in the night. Beside him, locked into the secondary safety harness on Unit 01's upper chest plate, Maya sat behind her carbine, her grey eyes narrowed through her optical sight, her hands steady as rock.
"Targeting array locked on their primary artillery platform!" Maya called out, her voice ringing clearly over the roar of Unit 01's high-frequency acoustic core. "The sixty-foot cannon is elevated! They were five minutes from opening fire on Korath!"
Danial didn't answer with words. He took a single, grounded step forward on the shoulder plates of the thirty-foot titan, his grey eyes locked onto the black-plate lines forming two thousand yards away.
[SYSTEM MONITOR: FIELD ENGAGEMENT - SICAR PLATEAU] [UNIT 01 - 40 CLASS-FOUR SIEGE SENTINELS: SYNCHRONIZED] [FREE VANGUARD INFANTRY: DEPLOYED (3,000 UNITS)] [TARGET: IMPERIAL SEVENTH ARMADA SIEGE POSITION] [MODE: TOTAL DISPOSITION CLEARANCE]
Danial raised his bare left arm, pulling his fist back to his ribs, and thrust his open palm straight toward the Imperial landing zone.
"UNIT ONE THROUGH FORTY..." Danial's voice echoed across the plateau, amplified by the high-frequency acoustic grid of Node 08 until it sounded like the roar of the mountain itself. "FIRE!"
SCREEEEEEECH-BOOOOOOM!
Forty thirty-foot Class-Four Siege Sentinels raised their shoulder-mounted acoustic cannons simultaneously.
They didn't fire solid tungsten slugs. They didn't fire explosive plasma.
Forty thirty-foot wide beams of pure, invisible, high-frequency harmonic force erupted from the bronze barrels, traveling across the two-thousand-yard distance at five thousand feet per second. The acoustic shockwaves ripped through the grey ash plain, creating sixty-foot wide trenches in the solid basalt floor as they passed, driving a wall of compressed air ahead of them that sounded like a thousand bronze bells being struck at once.
The forty harmonic beams hit the Imperial outer perimeter.
The two-inch composite steel barricades erected by the black-plate shock troops didn't explode into fire. The moment the high-frequency acoustic vibration touched the steel plates, the internal atomic structure of the composite armor shattered. The heavy iron barricades, the sixty-foot modular gun towers, and twenty pneumatic troop transport crawlers instantly disintegrated into clouds of fine, grey metallic powder.
THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD!
Three hundred Imperial shock troops, standing behind the outer barricades in full composite armor, were thrown sixty feet into the air by the concussive pressure wave, their heavy weapons shattered in their hands before their boots touched the ash again.
The Charge of the Free Vanguard
On the iron command platform of the Sovereign's Hammer, General Vane caught the railing as the concussive shockwave hit the platform, his dark uniform covered in fine metallic dust, his scarred face turning pale with absolute, unadulterated shock.
"GENERAL!" the targeting officer screamed, clutching a bleeding ear where his internal vox earpiece had exploded from the acoustic feedback. "THE OUTER PERIMETER IS GONE! THE FORWARD BARRICADES ARE COMPLETELY LIQUEFIED!"
"RE-ORIENT THE MAIN BATTERY!" Vane bellowed, his hoarse voice cutting through the panic as he drew his ornate officer's saber with a sharp CLINK. "LOWER THE ELEVATION TO ZERO DEGREES! TARGET THE LEADING CONSTRUCT!"
"We can't lower the barrel in time, General!" the officer wept in panic. "The elevation motors are bound by the acoustic vibration! The gears are frozen!"
"THEN MAN THE SECONDARY PNEUMATIC REPEATERS!" Vane shouted, his single blue eyes wild with cold, desperate fury. "HOLD THE SLOPES! NO RETREAT!"
From the dark, yawning mouths of the subterranean transit shafts behind the fourty Siege Sentinels, three thousand free miners and former Vanguard soldiers erupted onto the plain.
They didn't march in scattered, disorganized mobs.
Led by General Vance on foot, holding an iron lever-action repeater in his right hand, and Master Oakes, hauling a three-barreled heavy steam cannon mounted to a two-wheeled iron cart, the Free Vanguard formed four tight, interlocking tactical wedges behind the advancing siege constructs.
"FORWARD!" General Vance's voice bellowed across the ash plain, his single blue eye locked onto the Imperial transport dropships. "FIRST AND SECOND BATTALIONS... FLANK THE DROPSHIPS! THIRD BATTALION... SECURE THE SIEGE CANNON!"
"FIRE AT WILL!" Master Oakes roared, throwing his weight against the firing handle of his steam cannon.
CHUNK-CHUNK-CHUNK-CHUNK!
A rain of three-inch bronze canisters filled with iron scrap rained down on the retreating Imperial black-plates, exploding in sharp, concussive bursts that broke the remaining enemy squads into scattered, panicking groups.
On the upper chest plate of Unit 01, Maya dropped to one knee, locking her carbine's stock into her shoulder pocket.
Her grey eyes were cold, precise, and completely focused. Through her optical sighting glass, she tracked three Imperial heavy squad leaders attempting to rally a line of black-plates near the primary dropship ramp with liquid-plasma launchers.
THWACK-PING!
She squeezed the trigger. Her high-voltage copper-sleeved carbine fired a single, quartz-focused tungsten dart that struck the primary fuel reservoir of the lead plasma launcher at a distance of eight hundred yards.
KA-BOOOOOOOOOOM!
A blinding ball of green plasma fire erupted near the dropship ramp, instantly incinerating the launcher and throwing twenty black-plate shock troops off the access catwalk into the ash below.
"Clean shot, Scout!" Danial called down to her, his bare left arm glowing with a steady, brilliant amber light as he guided Unit 01's massive four-foot bronze leg straight through the remains of an Imperial supply bunker.
CRUSH-CLANK!
The thirty-foot siege construct didn't even slow down. It stepped over the shattered iron frame, its shoulder-mounted acoustic cannons sweeping left and right, dispersing every group of black-plate soldiers that attempted to form a defensive line with quick, three-second pulses of harmonic force.
The Broken Hammer
Within twenty minutes of the initial eruption from the ash shafts, the Imperial Seventh Armada's landing zone on the Sicar Plateau had ceased to exist as an organized military force.
Twenty-four of the thirty heavy transport dropships had been completely disabled, their landing gear sheared by acoustic shockwaves, their primary thrusters filled with pulverized iron dust. Hundreds of Imperial black-plate soldiers had laid down their heavy pneumatic suppressors, kneeling in the grey ash with their hands raised above their dark helmets as the combined squads of Sector 5 miners and former Vanguard soldiers surrounded them with raised rifles.
At the base of the Sovereign's Hammer, standing on the reinforced steel firing bed surrounded by twenty dead officers and shattered control slates, stood General Vane.
His clean, grey officer's coat was torn along the left shoulder, his double-gold epaulets covered in greasy black soot. In his right hand, he still held his ornate, ivory-handled saber, its polished blade dripping with steam from a nearby broken cooling pipe. In his left, he held his high-capacity plasma sidearm, its sight locked onto the steps of the command platform.
A heavy, ground-shaking THUD echoed behind him.
General Vane slowly turned around.
The thirty-foot Class-Four Siege Sentinel—Unit 01—stood five paces away, towering over the command platform like a bronze titan carved from the mountain itself. Its head was bowed slightly, its ring-shaped chest array glowing with a low, threatening fifteen-Hertz hum that made the steel plates beneath Vane's boots vibrate violently.
On the construct's upper shoulder platform, Danial Vance stepped to the edge, looking down at the Imperial High General.
Danial was uninjured. His dark tunic was dusted with grey ash, his grey eyes calm, deep, and grounded as he looked down at the man who had come to burn Mount Korath. Beside him stood Maya, her carbine held at low-ready, her thumb resting on the high-voltage capacitor switch.
From the steps of the firing bed, General Vance walked up, holding his iron lever-action repeater at his hip. His single blue eye met Vane's scarred face with cold, professional recognition.
"Drop the sidearm, Vane," General Vance said flatly. "It's over."
General Vane looked at his former colleague, then up at the thirty-foot Siege Sentinel, and finally at Danial Vance, whose bare left arm was glowing with a calm, absolute golden authority that filled the air around the platform with a deep, comforting warmth.
"Vance..." General Vane rasped out, his voice hoarse, dry, and bitter as he spat a mouthful of blood into the ash. "You... you turned your back on the High Directorate... for a boy?"
"I turned my back on a dying empire, Vane," General Vance corrected quietly, taking two steps up the steel platform. "To join the Master of the Free Sectors."
Vane's eyes twitched wildly. He looked down at his plasma sidearm, his knuckles turning white against the grip as his thumb moved toward the safety toggle.
THWACK!
A single tungsten dart fired from Maya's carbine struck the plasma sidearm dead center, shattering the weapon's quartz housing and knocking it clean out of Vane's hand into the ash six feet below.
Vane gasped, clutching his bruised wrist, his ornate saber slipping from his fingers and clattering uselessly against the steel deck plates.
Danial Vance raised his bare left hand, pointing his index finger at the sixty-foot barrel of the Sovereign's Hammer.
[EXECUTE: STRUCTURAL DISINTEGRATION] [TARGET: IMPERIAL SIEGE CANNON] [FREQUENCY: 880 HZ]
A single, razor-thin line of golden light shot from Danial's fingertip, striking the primary bronze cooling jacket of the sixty-foot cannon.
VUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-CRACK!
The massive, sixty-foot long magnetic accelerator—the ultimate siege weapon of the Imperial Seventh Armada—didn't explode. Under the high-frequency acoustic pulse, the heavy composite iron barrel, the twin copper coils, and the three-foot-thick steel mounting frame instantly unlocked their crystalline bonds, dissolving into a hundred tons of fine, grey iron dust that rained softly down over the command platform before blowing away into the cold mountain draft.
General Vane fell to his knees in the ash, staring at the empty space where his sixty-foot siege cannon had stood three seconds ago, his face completely devoid of color, his hands shaking violently as he looked up at Danial.
Danial slowly lowered his left arm. The Gold Mark beneath his skin dimmed to a warm, quiet bronze ember that sat deep within his forearm.
He stepped off Unit 01's shoulder, landing smoothly on his feet beside General Vance on the steel platform.
"Take General Vane and his surviving officers into custody," Danial commanded softly, his voice carrying cleanly across the quieted battlefield. "Treat their wounded, lock them in the transport dropships, and secure the plateau."
"And the Sovereign's Hammer, Master Vance?" a former Vanguard sergeant asked, pointing to the pile of grey dust on the platform.
Danial turned his head, looking past the shattered landing zone toward the vast, open plains of the western continent stretching out toward the horizon.
The grey volcanic dust clouds that had choked the sky above the Sicar Plateau were slowly parting, cut through by the brilliant, golden rays of the afternoon sun rising high over the mountain peaks of Mount Korath.
"The Hammer is broken," Danial Vance declared quietly, his grey eyes reflecting the clean, golden light of the new day. "Now we go build the peace."
