Chapter 15 - The check-up

Chapter 15

The door creaked open, and a nurse entered to check on us. "Good morning," she greeted.

I opened my eyes, having been resting on Johan's bed. "Good morning," I responded, my voice sharp and deep.

"Is it morning already?" Johan asked, staggering up from the bed.

"Morning," Vivian greeted, yawning and stretching on my former bed.

"Hope there's no problem, nurse?" I asked, staring at her.

"Not at all, just here for a clean-up," she replied.

"Ohh, that's right. Nurses do clean up your rooms when you are unconscious. Thanks, nurse," I said with a warm smile.

She smiled back and continued with her work. "Do you know if the doctor is around?" I asked.

"No, not yet. He will be resuming at 12:00 pm today," she replied.

"Oh, okay, thanks," I said glancing at the wall clock, which read 8:10 am.

Vivian looked in the same direction, and I guessed there was still time before he would arrive.

We ate the leftovers from the basket while the nurse took them away.

We waited for the doctor and sat silently, each lost in our thoughts. The nurse did her work and left the room, leaving us to quiet contemplation.

Johan broke the silence, his voice low and thoughtful. "I wonder what the doctor will say when he sees us."

Vivian nodded, her eyes serious. "We need to be prepared for anything. We knew the reason for our predicament.

I nodded, my mind calm but racing with possibilities. "We need to stay calm and focused. We will get through this."

The three of us sat in agreement, our bond strengthened by the uncertainty we faced. We focused on meditating deeply for a long time.

Ahh, pheww… Johan broke the meditation, his back lying flat on the bed.

"Jeez… can't even meditate in peace," Vivian retaliated.

"Come on, just staring at an emptiness for all this time is no fun," he retorted.

I watched them without interfering in their little play. A sound at the door halted their drama.

"Who's there?" Vivian asked abruptly, sitting upright immediately.

The door opened, and the nurse entered. "It's me, nurse," she said. "The doctor is here."

"Ohh, is it time already?" I asked, glancing at the wall clock, which read 10:26.

"No," she replied, "he came early today. He seems lively for today's work."

We proceeded to the doctor's office, opening the door to reveal his face. "Good morning everyone," he said, his tone cheerful and eager, as if he had been waiting for us.

We exchanged greetings, and the doctor stepped further into the room, retrieving a file. "I see you are all looking well. "I have reviewed your charts, and I'm eager to discuss your progress."

Johan, Vivian, and I exchanged curious glances. The doctor's words hinted at more information, and we were eager to hear it.

The doctor continued, "As you all know, you have undergone significant changes. I would like to run some additional tests to better understand what's happening."

Vivian's eyes narrowed slightly, her expression thoughtful.

"Tests, not a check-up?" Vivian asked, her voice laced with curiosity.

The doctor smiled reassuringly. "Nothing too invasive, don't worry. Just some scans and observations to help us understand your… unique situation.

Johan nodded, his expression interested. "Use me to learn from these tests, doctor," he said voluntarily.

The doctor's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "I want to understand the extent of the changes you have undergone, and see if we can identify any patterns or correlations."

I leaned forward, my mind racing with possibilities. "Do you think these tests will help you and us to understand what's happening to us?"

The doctor nodded, his expression serious. "I hope so, Astra. We are navigating uncharted territory here, and every piece of information brings us closer to understanding what's going on."

The doctor's word hangs in the air, filled with promise and uncertainty. Vivian's eyes locked with his, her gaze piercing. "When are we getting the results?"

The doctor's expression turned thoughtful. "I will expect the tests to take a few hours. We should have some preliminary results by this afternoon,"

Johan nodded, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. "And what's the next step?"

The doctor smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "We will go over the results, and see where they take us."

I leaned back in a chair, my mind calm, but racing with possible outcomes.

I appreciate your cooperation, Astra. He said, his expression serious and lively.

"Let us all work concurrently to unravel the mysteries of you all… unique situations."

The doctor nodded, making a short note on the chart. "I will send the nurse in to prep you for the tests. Please cooperate with her, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns."

With that, the doctor stood up, signaling the end of our meeting. We exchanged nods, and he left the room, leaving us wondering what lies ahead.

The same nurse entered shortly after, a friendly smile on her face. "Alright, let's get you prepped for those tests," she said efficiently getting to work.

The nurse continued to prep us for the tests, her movements efficient and calm. We sat in silence, each lost in our thoughts, as she hooked us up to various machines and took our vital signs.

Johan broke the silence, his voice low, "You think they will find anything… unusual?"

Vivian's eyes met his, her expression serious. "We are okay, Johan. We are different from the last time."

I nodded, my mind calm. "Stay calm and focused, no matter what stay focused," I said, my actions composed.

The nurse looked up, her eyes meeting theirs. "Don't worry, everything will be fine. These tests are just routine," she said smiling.

We exchanged skeptical glances, but didn't say anything. We knew nothing about the situation.

The doctor entered the room, gazing across the space before settling on us. "Alright, let's get started," he announced and proceeded, his voice exuding confidence.
