Chapter 5 - Breakfast

Sebastian was talking to young Claire when Councilman Robert kept glaring at her.

This woman had the audacity to disrespect him in the market.

Sebastian glanced toward Robert and said calmly,

"If you keep glaring at her like that, she might turn to dust. Don't you agree, King Remy?"

Remy gave a polite, slightly forced smile. "Sir Robert, Claire has grown up in a loving environment. You should try not to scare her."

The tension in the room eased a little. Servants began placing trays of fruit, bread, and warm tea on the long table. Everyone took their seats for breakfast.

Young Claire sat beside Sebastian, her posture straight, her expression calm. Sebastian could tell the girl was smitten with him — her glances, shy and fleeting, gave her away.

He turned his attention toward Remy, his tone shifting to something smoother, weightier.

"Since the time I became King of Mistlake," he began, "my parents have urged me to find a queen. They sent numerous women to me, but none caught my attention. Your daughter, Claire, is beautiful — with intellect and sharpness. Most women I've met care only for fine gowns and soirées. Allow me to ask for her hand in marriage."

A quiet shock filled the table.

Celina shook her head. "Milord, she's only fourteen — and she seems smitten by you. But when she comes of age, her interests might change. We wish for her to find love, not a marriage of convenience."

Remy nodded in agreement. "Milord, she is still a child. Her heart may change in the coming years."

Sebastian's lips curved into a smirk — not cruel, but cold.

"It was not up for consideration," he said softly. "She will marry me once she turns eighteen. And about her interests…" His smile deepened, dark and deliberate.

"I will make sure no one stays alive."

The air grew heavy. Even the flickering torches seemed to dim.

Young Claire's face went pale. Horror flashed in her blue eyes at the thought — that the King would kill anyone who might take her heart away. Quickly, she forced a smile, masking her fear.

"I will make sure nothing happens, Papa," she said quietly.

Remy smiled, but worry filled his eyes. His daughter barely knows what she's walking into.

Across the table, Celina's hands trembled slightly. Fear clouded her gaze as she looked at her daughter and then at the King. When the King learns what powers she truly holds… will things still be alright?.
