I had no rational explanation for why I reached out to him. Something deep inside me rebelled against witnessing his defeat. The weight of Bonita's betrayal pressed down on his shoulders like a crushing burden, and I couldn't bear to watch it destroy him.
What that woman had done went far beyond a simple betrayal. She had twisted a blade deep into his heart, and the aftermath was written across every line of exhaustion on Papa's face. He had harbored genuine feelings for Bonita, perhaps even love, and she had trampled on those emotions without a second thought.
Papa shifted toward me, managing a fragile smile that made my throat constrict painfully.
"What is it, Jessica?" His voice carried that gentle tone that always made me feel like his little girl again.
I stared at him, my mind scrambling for words that refused to come. Finally, my heart spoke before my brain could intervene.
"I'm still angry with you."
