Chapter 243 - Volume 4, Chapter 12: Raphael’s First Examination

The air within the subterranean amphitheater compressed with a sharp, metallic hum. High above, the crimson barrier shifted its inner frequency as pale, translucent civilian projections emerged across the cracked obsidian floor. Magicule-constructed simulations of bystanders, flickering like fragile ghosts across the battle line.

"Phase two," Guy announced without emotion. "A mediator doesn't fight in an empty world, Rimuru. If your strength obliterates everything behind your target, you are just another disaster."

Loki's playful grin faded from the elevated balcony. He set his heavy coin back into his pocket, his posture straightening as his maroon eyes narrowed. 'He's testing governance now, not just reflexes. Good. Let's see if you can hold your ground without destroying the room, Rimuru.'

Guy moved. He fractured his magicule signature into four separate readings. His real body appeared directly in front of Rimuru while three compressed shockwaves raced toward three distinct civilian clusters scattered across the floor.

[Notice: Multilayer Barrier deployment advised. Initiating layered defense.]

'Do it!' Rimuru commanded.

Three remote barrier sheets unfolded instantly around the threatened civilian clusters, while five tighter hexagonal planes snapped into existence around Rimuru's body to absorb Guy's incoming right hook. Simultaneously, Rimuru extended fluid, gelatinous tendrils from his forearms. Utilizing his flexible slime structure to anchor his footing and held his position.

Guy's fist slammed into the central barrier. The first three layers shattered instantly like cheap glass, but the fourth held long enough for Rimuru to alter his body density, turning his torso into a semi-liquid cushion that absorbed the remaining kinetic momentum.

[Notice: Impact absorbed. Analyzing target's spatial disruption pattern...]

'Got it!' Rimuru thought, driving a surge of Predation forward. A vortex of dark crimson-and-black force erupted from his palm, attempting to engulf Guy's follow-up strike before it could reach him.

Guy simply smiled. Before Predation's absorption field could close around his magicule signature, Guy shifted from physical pressure to concentrated thermal energy. A white-hot needle of plasma pierced the center of the absorption field, igniting the air and melting the obsidian floor beneath Rimuru's feet.

[Warning: Calculation invalidated. Target substituted physical impact with elemental conversion.]

The thermal spike bypassed Rimuru's defensive array, forcing him to sever the anchored tendrils and roll backward to keep the extreme heat from scorching through his main body. The continuous calculation had been correct based on physical velocity, yet the moment Rimuru committed his barrier to kinetic dampening, Guy changed the nature of the threat entirely.

'He's feeding Raphael false premises,' Rimuru realized. 'Raphael's math is flawless, but Guy isn't giving us normal numbers.'

Guy stepped through the rising steam, his steps changing length and rhythm without warning. "You keep solving the attack in front of you. A ruler also answers for what his solution destroys behind him."

In the gallery, Shizue watched with one hand resting on her scabbard. 'Remember Arashi, Rimuru-san. You did not build a nation by calculating every outcome. You built it by choosing what to protect.'

Down in the arena, memories of Arashi rose independently in Rimuru's mind: muddy streets, frightened citizens, desperate defenses, and promises made before he possessed the strength to guarantee them.

Beside Shizue, Diablo remained perfectly still. The destruction of Rimuru's barriers did not disturb his serene, confident smile.

"Lord Rimuru has understood the plan," Diablo murmured smoothly. "Guy's attacks are no longer the true difficulty."

Shizue glanced at him sideways, her brow furrowing slightly. "And if he tears himself apart protecting them?"

"Then he will adapt," Diablo replied without a second of hesitation. "Lord Rimuru always does."

Across the gallery balcony, Leon Cromwell folded his arms, his cold golden eyes tracking Rimuru's positioning. "He is changing his priorities mid-fight. He has stopped measuring personal risk."

Luminous nodded slowly beside him, her heterochromatic eyes reflecting the crimson barrier light. "It is no longer an calculation of survival. He is establishing a perimeter."

Down below, Rimuru refocused his internal core and issued a direct, unyielding command to his internal analytical engine.

'Raphael, drop victory conditions. Reset primary objective. Priority one: complete insulation of every civilian cluster. Priority two: contain residual shockwaves within our grid. Provide collateral probabilities.'

[Confirmed. System priority reorganized. Defensive parameters locked to civilian preservation.]

Guy didn't wait for Rimuru to adjust. He flicked his wrist, generating three simultaneous, high-density wind blades that curved around Rimuru in sweeping arcs. Two were aimed directly at Rimuru's flanks, while the third shot toward a cluster of three civilian projections anchored near the eastern arena wall.

[Notice: Defensive pathways mapped.]

Raphael rapidly presented two immediate operational solutions across Rimuru's mind:

[Option 1: Evade left and deploy maximum magicule fortification to neutralize flank attacks. Personal survival rate: 98%. Collateral damage to eastern civilian cluster: 100%.]

[Option 2: Intercept eastern wind blade using full body mass and secondary barriers. Flank attacks will strike unprotected main body. Personal damage sustained: High. Collateral damage to eastern civilian cluster: 0%.]

Rimuru didn't hesitate. 'Option two. Protect them.'

He abandoned his own evasion line entirely. Rimuru spread his slime body into a dense, translucent wall directly across the eastern blade's path while extending secondary barrier sheets behind him to insulate the projections from atmospheric disruption.

The eastern wind blade slammed into Rimuru's expanded mass, cutting deep into his fluid structure and disrupting the magicule flow through his torso. Simultaneously, the two flank attacks caught his exposed rear, tearing through his lower mass and scattering blue slime across the scorched obsidian floor.

Rimuru locked his center of gravity, holding the protective barriers intact until the wind blades dissipated into harmless breezes.

The civilian projections behind him flickered softly, completely unscathed.

Blue slime mass dripped from the torn edge of Rimuru's torso as he forced himself upright. His human-shaped body trembled as he raised his guard once more, positioning himself firmly between Guy Crimson and every remaining simulation in the quadrant.

Loki's playful posture vanished entirely. He rested both hands on the velvet railing, his sharp green eyes fixed on the blue-haired figure standing torn and damaged on the floor below.

"He chose the people behind him over the opening in front of him," Loki noted softly, his voice devoid of its usual mocking sarcasm.

Guy paused five paces away, his crimson eyes gleaming with the first faint spark of genuine satisfaction.
