Chapter 39 - Scarlett kidnapped

He stepped closer, circling around me like a predator studying wounded prey. I felt exposed, vulnerable—broken. I just wanted to see Eva.

"Scarlett Snow," he murmured, still pacing around me.

My breath hitched.

How does he even know my name? I have never even seen the outside walls of Mr. Grey's mansion, so how?

"Who are you?" I whispered. Fear clawed at my insides, but I forced it down. I refused to tremble before this man when I lived with someone far worse.

Speaking of Mr. Grey… I was already dead.

If he found out about the mess I had caused, he'd bury me alive without hesitation.

The man chuckled.

"The last time I checked, the heartless Don Xavier Grey doesn't keep women," he said lazily.

My head snapped up, trying to catch where this conversation was heading.

"But you," he added, "you must be special."

I almost laughed.

Special? If only he knew the hell I was surviving.

Mr Grey would chose his shoes over me.

"You're wrong. I mean nothing to him," I replied with a mocking smile.

He finally stood in front of me, giving me a full view of his face.

He was tall with a solid build and sharp jawline. His hair was slicked back neatly, soft brown eyes steady, lips full—there was nothing intimidating about him.

If someone told me he was in the mafia, I'd laugh and boldly say he's not . He lacked the cold aura and crushing authority that radiates around Mr. Grey.

"Please… where is Eva?" I asked, ignoring the reason he'd brought me here. What ever it is, it had to wait, I need to make sure she's fine first. He simply stared like he was studying me. Maybe he was surprised by my confidence.

Not like it would last forever.

Ajax POV:

What the hell.

This girl has nerves.

The things coming out of her mouth are far tougher than she looks. She resembles an animated character—pink, white-tipped hair and all just made her even look more like an character and not a human.

Xavier really lucked out with this one. She's unbelievably beautiful.

But I can't let that distract me.

For her to live with Xavier Grey, she must be important to him.

Which makes her the perfect bait.

*My* key to capturing the one and only Xavier Grey.

If I manage to get rid of him, the entire mafia world will kneel before me.

I would be all powerful.

Looks are deceiving—hers and mine.

Time to show this little damsel just how cruel I can be.

I snapped my fingers. The door burst open, and two of my men entered, dragging a woman half beaten to death.

The girl's nonchalant expression vanished instantly.

Her eyes widened, her whole body shaking violently.

Good.

She screamed, thrashing against the ropes—but then something happened that left *me* stunned.

She broke free.

Just… slipped out and ran straight to the maid, wrapping her arms around the woman and sobbing.

What the actual—

"Am so so sorry, it's all my fault, I should have listened to you in the first place" she whispered, holding the maid firmly to her chest.

Wow wow wow, am I really seeing this? And my idiotic men just stood there watching. Bunch of fools.

I shot them a deadly glare, and they reacted instantly, yanking the maid away from her.

She fought, but they overpowered her. Then she turned to me, tears shimmering in her eyes.

"Please… let her go. Take me instead."

She crawled toward me, voice cracking.

I smiled slowly.

She was really this attached to a mere maid?

Pathetic. But also… impressive.

I pulled out her phone and tossed it to her. "Call him."

She knew who I meant.

She dialed Xavier Grey's number again and again. He didn't pick—until suddenly, he did.

He said nothing.she spoke first, hands visibly shaking.

"Mr. Grey," she whispered. "I'm in trouble. I got kidnapped—"

His cold voice cut her off.

"You dare go against me, pony?" His tone was relaxed, almost bored, like he was lounging on a beach.

Not even a hint of concern. Disgusting.

"Mr. Grey, please…" she sobbed. "Eva's in bad shape."

"You should stop worrying about others," he replied, "and start worrying about what I'll do to you when I get my hands on you."

"Please—!" she screamed, but the line had already gone dead.

Unbelievable.

How does a man live with himself being that cold?

"He's not coming," she whispered. "Kill me if you want… just let Eva go." Her voice cracked as she pleaded.

I smirked.

Oh, he's coming.

His last sentence made that perfectly clear.

I turned and walked out. My men would handle the rest.

Inside the control room, I watched every live feed. The perfect ambush was ready. My men were stationed along every possible route.

All they had to do was weaken him before he reached the building.

And when he finally did…

I would take his head as my trophy.
