Chapter 1 - A visit to the past

Lucas hunched history shoulders against the driving rain, attempting to somehow make his body smaller and his coat larger as he walked up the steps to the library and crossed the exposed space from the metro station to the imposing doors. He reached the doors and stood, cool water seeping down his neck whilst he waited for the doors to open.

The doors remained shut. A multitude of faces in their carved panels stared past his with disinterested. Two brass metallic rectangles at chest height glitter at him, so he placed his right hand against one, willing a connection with the device's control systems, but feeling only a cold metallic disinterest in return. Picked out in shadow at the top of the panels he noted perhaps the manufacturer designation, PUSH.

"Is this place that old?" Lucas thought to himself, "no servos, no interactive, no avatar?" He applied pressure and felt a physical rather than a digital reaction... leaning into the action the doors began to move, swinging inwards and opening to reveal the secrets within... but without servos, sensors or automation, merely the application of strength to move the towering doors and permit entry to the library. Lucas marvelled that any public building lacked automation, but perhaps this reflected the falling use of books.
