He tossed the shard on the bed and sank down beside it.
"What's behind you?"
Kirby pointed at something tucked neatly under his pillow.
"How did that get there?" Ray asked as he reached for the object.
It was a wrapped box. There was no card on it, nothing.
His mother's death had taught him a good lesson about opening gifts from unknown sources.
"Aren't you going to open it?" Kirby asked.
Ray shook his head, already moving towards the door to throw it away.
"Give it a look, there's no harm there."
Raising an eyebrow as if he'd just heard a dog speaking French, he pushed the box into Kirby's hands.
"You open it.".
"Fine."
Kirby peeled off the wrap without taking his eyes off Ray.
Inside it was a grey box.
Ray inched forward to get a glimpse at the contents of the box.
Inside it was a recorder.
"Hell." Kirby whispered.
"I don't remember ever needing one of those."
Kirby pushed the play button and the thing came alive.
