Chapter 15 - Chapter 15. Specular Sabotage

The northern tracks of Oakhaven were bathed in a treacherous, rhythmic hum. The iron rails, slick with a greasy mixture of coal dust and rain, stretched like dark veins from the mouth of the eastern mines straight into the monolithic silhouette of the Guild processing depot.

Ezekiel crouched atop a rusted boiler unit twenty paces from the warehouse walls. His new leather-reinforced tunic was soaked through, but the cold no longer touched him; his core was fueled by the anticipation of the Amalgam below. He pulled a small, jagged fragment of specular slate from his pouch, holding it at a sharp angle to peer at the main loading dock without breaking his cover.

Through the reflection, the warehouse was a fortress of hostile light.

[Versum System: High-Density Security Active] Threat Count: 8 Guild Enforcers (Human/Dwarf) Active Magic: Proximity Runes (Alarm Class) — 4 Anchors

Two human mercenaries paced the loading platform, their heavy repeating crossbows slung low but ready. Near the reinforced iron doors, a dwarf enforcer stood beneath the warm, orange glow of a shuttered oil lantern, his fingers casually tapping the pommel of a massive war-pick. But it wasn't the guards that held Ezekiel's attention. It was the faint, geometric web of crimson magical threads crisscrossing the threshold—the proximity wards Kaelen had warned him about.

Ezekiel shifted his slate mirror, tracing the crimson threads back to their source. The wards weren't anchored to the door itself; they were tied to four small, polished brass discs embedded in the masonry around the frame.

To a traditional saboteur, breaching this would require a silent assassination of the guards followed by a meticulous dispelling of the runes. To a Refractor, the security array was not a barrier—it was a weapon waiting to be redirected.

Ezekiel opened his coal-black eyes wide, letting the silver fluid of his Amalgam flood his optic nerves until the world in his mirror splintered into clean, volatile vectors of energy.

He didn't attack the guards. He targeted the lantern swinging above the dwarf enforcer's head.

[Skill Activated: Glint (Level 2) — Specular Braid]

A needle-thin, silver beam shot from Ezekiel's pupils, struck the slate fragment in his hand, and bounced with absolute precision directly into the burning core of the oil lantern. The ambient light didn't just flash; it caught the silver mana, amplifying exponentially as it fractured against the wet, reflective slate walls of the depot.

CRACK.

The lantern exploded in a silent, blinding lance of pure, focused white light. The dwarf enforcer let out a choking gasp, instantly dropping his war-pick as he clutched his smoking goggles. The two human mercenaries whipped around, their vision instantly drowned in a sea of violent white spots.

"Ambush! The vents!" one of them screamed, firing his repeating crossbow blindly into the dark alley.

Before the first bolt could even strike the stone, Ezekiel dropped from the boiler. He didn't use the door. Guided entirely by the silver outlines in his mirror, he lunged toward a narrow, glass-paned transom window three meters above the ground. He drove his black-iron hunting blade into the frame, shattering the pane, and slipped inside like a trailing ribbon of smoke.

The interior of the warehouse was a paradise of black glass.

Rows upon rows of heavy wooden crates sat stacked to the vaulted ceiling, many of them split open to reveal massive, raw clusters of deep-tier specular obsidian. Even in the dim twilight of the warehouse interior, the stones pulsed with a faint, oily purple luminescence—the unmistakable signature of high-density, unrefined Amalgam.

The air inside was thick with the scent of ozone and raw, untamed magic. As Ezekiel stepped closer to the nearest crate, the silver channels beneath his pale skin began to throb violently, starving for the feast before him.

"Intruder! In the aisles!" a voice roared from the broken window.

Three more Guild enforcers had rushed inside, their lanterns casting long, dancing beams of yellow light through the rows of crates. They caught the silhouette of the eleven-year-old boy standing before their master's prize.

"Kill the rat! Don't damage the cargo!"

Ezekiel didn't run. A cold, vicious smile finally tugged at the corners of his lips. They wanted to protect the cargo, but they had brought the one thing the cargo needed to ignite: light.

As the enforcers raised their crossbows, their lanterns illuminated the massive rows of specular obsidian. Thousands of natural, razor-sharp facets of black glass caught the yellow beams, reflecting them into infinity.

Ezekiel slammed both palms hard against the nearest obsidian cluster. He didn't absorb the energy this time; he pushed his own silver mana into the stone, turning the entire warehouse into a single, interconnected network of mirrors.

"Refract," Ezekiel whispered.

The scattered beams of the guards' lanterns were instantly seized by the obsidian grid. The faint yellow light was compressed, sharpened, and converted into a blinding, silver storm of laser-like lances that crisscrossed the warehouse aisles in a chaotic, dizzying web.

The enforcers didn't even have time to scream. The silver lances pierced through their leather armor, boiling the air around them and shattering their lanterns into violent bursts of oil and flame. The secondary explosions caught the volatile, unrefined Amalgam inside the crates.

A chain reaction of pure, crystalline energy erupted. The warehouse walls began to crack as the specular slate foundations resonated with the overload.

Ezekiel stood at the center of the blinding, silver vortex, his hood thrown back, his coal-black eyes drinking in the cascading torrent of raw, liberated Amalgam. The sheer volume of magical essence flooding into his body felt like molten steel pouring through his veins, restructuring his internal channels with a violent, agonizing force.

The roof of the depot groaned, heavy timber beams snapping as the structural integrity failed entirely. With a deafening roar, the center of the warehouse collapsed inward, buried under a mountain of shattered black glass and burning debris.

When the dust finally settled into the rain-slicked ruins of the northern tracks, the guards outside rushed into the smoke, their weapons raised. But they found nothing but scorched wood, melted iron rails, and empty, shattered crates.

Master Brock's illicit fortune was gone, reduced to ash and silent stone. And somewhere in the dark alleys of Oakhaven, a new predator moved through the reflections, his steps no longer bound by the laws of the physical world.
