Chapter 13 - A Glaze In City

Johan wakes up and looks at the clock.

"Yah! It's just 11 o'clock. Hmmm! I can sleep for a little bit more. I just need to make lunch for Amili and Armin."

Suddenly, Armin is rushing towards his room. "Doctor, Doctor, it's an emergency."

Johan opens the door, rubbing his eyes. "What? What? What emergency has come?"

"Doctor, Anty Nina is waiting outside the gate," Armin replies breathlessly.

Johan looks at him, shocked, his mouth still open. "This is an emergency for me…" He screams internally and quickly closes the door to his room.

Jennifer scratches her head, sighing, and goes to open the gate.

"Good morning, Anty. Why didn't you come to the birthday party?"

The woman standing there is Nina, Lina Bennett's sister. She looks to be the same age as Jennifer, but she is older than her mother. She wears a beautiful gown and a fashionable Cloche hat.

"Hm! What is the date?" Nina asks Jennifer, her tone sharp.

"14 July," Jennifer answers, puzzled.

"What is the year?" Nina asks another question as a taunt.

"1922. Anty, what happened? Do you have any problems with memorisation? You might need to take therapy from Johan," Jennifer says with genuine care.

"I am not old yet, my memory is perfect, I think your memory has a problem."

"You two were born in 1897, and your age two is 25," Nina states loudly.

"Anty, what happened? Have I forgotten something? Is it a special day?" Jennifer asks her.

"Most of your age are already married. Now enough, I arranged a date for you two to show your future partners for marriage," Nina replies.

"D-d-date? No! No! No! No! No!" Jennifer protests, shaking her head vigorously.

"Listen, I have found the best boy for you and the best girl for Johan. Now get ready soon." Nina moves past Jennifer with angry determination, going inside and heading toward Johan's room.

"Johan… open the door and get ready." She knocks sharply on his door.

Finally, Johan opens his door, trembling with fear. "Good morning…"

"Do you remember what day it is?" Nina asks him, her voice angry.

"Yeah, I get ready in just 2 to 3 minutes," Johan replies sadly, already backing away and closing his door.

"Johan, I suppose you refuse to go," Jennifer says disappointedly.

"Jennifer, you are a girl. You need more time to get ready. We need to be present at Restaurant Clesever before lunchtime. Go now…" Nina loudly ordered her to be ready soon.

"What about the lunch of Armin and Amili ?" Jenefer asks.

"That's why I came here. Go now…" Nina replies loudly.

The sound of Nina's commanding voice is so loud that Amili and Armin, who are sitting in the library, tremble.

After an hour, Nina serves food at the dining table. Then she goes to Johan's therapy room. She sits on a couch, looking at a family photo frame of Johan, Joseph and Jennifer.

"They grow up, Lina. Your birds have grown up," says with a smile.

Jennifer enters the room. She looks stunning in a golden gown, complemented by a flowered straw hat perched on her head.

Nina finds a glimpse of Lina, her sister, in Jennifer's appearance.

"Jennifer, you look like your mother today," Nina says in surprise. She becomes emotional for a brief moment.

Johan also comes in. He wears his Father's best Tuxedo, complete with a Bow Tie.

"How do I look?" Johan asks them, adjusting his jacket.

"The most handsome man in the city," Nina praises him, beaming.

"Do you wear father's Tuxedo?" Jennifer asks him, noticing the familiar cut.

"Mother gave me all of Father's clothes. She wanted everybody to remember him, just by seeing them," Johan replies, giving his signature gentle smile.

Jennifer and Nina quickly look away. "Why are we blushing? It's just Johan," Jennifer questions herself.

"I know, but he is truly handsome," Nina replies.

They walk along the streets toward Restaurant Clesever. Everyone stares at them in amazement. Johan and Jennifer look incredibly beautiful, shining like a glaze over the city.

"Don't let the boys look at you," Nina tells Jennifer, trying to hide Jennifer's face slightly.

"Just tell them she is Jennifer. They'll look away on their own," Johan says sarcastically to Jennifer.

When they hear the name Jennifer, two men on the street immediately turn their heads away, acting like they didn't notice her.

"By the way, girls have been staring at you for a long time. You also need to hide your face." Jennifer says, sounding annoyed.

"Ugh! I'm tired, and I need to sleep. Aunt, I already love someone. Please just leave me alone," Johan pleads dramatically.

Nina grabs his collar and says angrily, "Listen, dear Nephew, I worked so hard to find this match for you. If you refuse, it will be your worst nightmare."

"Okay, okay," Johan replies, scared.

"Oi! Truly tell me, who are you waiting for? Is it Emma?" Jennifer whispers close to his ear.

"No, this is not what you are thinking. She is my patient. I don't have such a feeling for her." Johan replies loudly.

"Is it Freya?" Jennifer again asks, but this time loudly.

"That woman is already married to Arthur, even they have a child. Forget about her," Nina warns him.

"Jennifer, should I tell Aunt Nina about you and Eloise?"

"Eeee!" Jennifer looks at Nina with sudden fear.

"Eloise Josephine, is it…? You are Alexander Baros's daughter. Don't you know about the deep feud between these two families? He is the direct son of Vlad Josephine," Nina states angrily.

"Aunt, He isn't like that; he respects my father, and he is a very gentle man," Jennifer defends Eloise.

"No matter what he is, he is a Josephine. I can't put you in that kind of danger, my only niece." Nina takes both of them by the hand and pulls them along.

They reach the restaurant. A waiter comes up to them.

"Good afternoon, welcome to the Restaurant Clesever. How can I help you?" the Waiter greets them.

"Reserve a table for seven people," Nina instructs the waiter.

"Okay, Madam, as you wish."

They settle in, awaiting the others. Nina rises, addressing them, "Listen closely. Call me your cousin sister, not Aunt, as 'Aunt' feels rather…inconvenient. We, the people of the world of life, can't appear older than 30. Therefore, we must conceal our true identities from ordinary people. I'll be bringing them in shortly."

Johan and Jennifer nod their heads fearfully in agreement.

After a few minutes, Nina returns with their guests: a twin brother-sister, along with their parents. They take seats across from Johan and Jennifer.

"Johan and Jennifer, let me introduce our guests. He is Crist Frege, a lawyer; his sister, Cristina Frege, who recently finished her Master's of Arts; and their parents, Mr and Mrs Frege," Nina introduces them.

"And these are my cousins: Johan Bennet, a psychiatrist and a kind gentleman, and Jennifer Bennet, a sergeant and medicine expert."

After the introduction, Nina talks with the guests for a long time, but Johan and Jennifer remain silent.

Jennifer whispers in her ear and asks her. "Anty, how did you find these twins for us?"

"With so much hard work, this is the chance to get you married at the same time. They are one of the respected families in the city. And call me sister," Nina replies.

"Can I ask her some questions?" Crist asks Nina, referring to Jennifer.

"Yes, yes, you can ask any question about Jennifer. In fact, there is a park nearby. You can go there with her and talk with her," Nina tells him eagerly.

"Johan, you can also go there with Cristina," Nina tells Johan.

"Yes, sister," they reply together.

In the park, Jennifer and Crist sit on a bench.

"Are you comfortable?" Crist asks her.

"Yeah, yeah," Jennifer replies nervously.

Johan and Cristina are walking together in the park.

Cristina suddenly tells him, "I am a big fan of your mother."

"Oh! That's nice," Johan says.

"People found a painting of your mother in Deuchasland. In the painting, a boy was helping a pigeon and a crow. Was that boy you?" Cristina asks him.

"No, I guess it wasn't me," Johan replies.

"I guess it was Adrian," Johan whispers in his mind.

"I really like these artistic things. I love to make a fantasy novel. But my parents can't understand my thoughts. They always compare me with my brother, though. I'm not like him, and it annoys me," Cristina tells Johan.

"Let's sit on the park swing," Johan suggests, quickly changing the subject and moving toward the swings.

"Mr. Johan, is that safe?" Cristina asks him.

"It looks risky for a moment, but it's fun. Just like, we take some different decisions than others." Johan says.

They sit on the swing.

"When Jennifer and I were little, we spent most of our time trying to climb trees. Mother always worried about us, but soon she started supporting us. I asked her once, 'You used to stop us from climbing. Now, why do you help us?' She said, 'We should have been born as birds. We have always been in trees. God made us humans by mistake.' She also started climbing trees with us." Johan explains, smiling brightly.

"My mother always tells me that parents always worry about us. They think we can't choose our own path, which is why they compare us to others. But when they see we are curious about something, they always help us directly or indirectly."

"Wow, your mother sounds amazing," Cristina says softly, looking down at her hands.

"If my parents were like that. They only see my brother's success. Everything I do, they measure it against his success," Cristina tells Johan, sadly.

"That's a big achievement. Does art make you happy?" Johan asks her.

"That's easy for you to say. You're Johan Bennet. Do you ever feel pressure to be perfect, though? Since your mother was so brilliant?" she replies, her voice lighter now.

"Why, I can be perfect in my own way," Johan replies with a confident smile.

His words create a flicker of hope in her eyes.

"So, what is your purpose, Dr. Bennet?" Cristina asks, turning slightly toward him with a genuine smile.

"Bringing the smile back to my little brother's face," Johan replies.

They increase the height of their swing, enjoying the air. "You are truly the world's best psychiatrist," Cristina says, her voice filled with thanks.

Crist, watching them, turns to Jennifer. "Hey, first time I've seen my sister so happy. He is perfect for my sister."

"Yeah, that's why I call him Dr. Dream," Jennifer tells him, smiling.

Crist reaches out and gently grabs Jennifer's hand. "Miss Jennifer, do you accept our family's proposal?"

"Sorry, neither of us is ready," Jennifer replies.

"But why?" Crist asks, puzzled.

"We adopted seven orphan kids. We have to take care of them, and also my younger brother. And I already love somebody. Even Johan loves somebody. Sister Nina forcefully took us here," Jennifer explains to him.

Crist understands. He is sad for a moment, but quickly smiles. "The person whom you love must be the world's happiest."

Then Crist walks over to Johan and Cristina.

"Hey, your date went well?" Crist asks them.

The swing stops moving. Crist whispers in Cristina's ear, "Johan loves somebody."

Cristina looks at Johan, then smiles. "I will talk with your sister. Don't worry."

They all return to the restaurant table. Jennifer takes a huge, bracing breath and loudly says to Nina, "Sorry, my brother and I cannot accept this proposal."

All the Frege family members, including Nina, freeze in shock.

Jennifer quickly adds, "We are simply not ready for marriage. Sister Nina, please forgive us."

Nina suddenly stands up from her chair. "Jennifer!"

"Very, very sorry, but Johan and I have so many responsibilities, especially concerning Joseph."

"Jennifer, where is Johan?" Nina asks her with anger.

Jennifer looks around wildly. "Where is Johan?"

"I think he is still outside," Cristina replies calmly.

Jennifer rushes outside. He looked out at the road and saw that John was already running away quickly.

"Hey, Johan, you always put me first in any dangerous situation!" Jennifer shouts playfully, grabbing the skirt of her gown and running after him.

Cristina stands and waves goodbye to the fleeing pair. "Fly like a bird!"

Johan, without stopping, waves back. "You too!"

Nina also comes out. "Aren't these two grown up yet? They always act like kids," says in anger.

Soon, Jennifer and Johan reach the safety of the Jardin Paisible. They both stop inside the gate, panting heavily.

"Is she coming behind us?" Jennifer asks Johan, breathless.

"I guess no." Johan gasps, leaning over.

Jennifer opens the door and enters her reception room.

Suddenly, the telephone nearby rings.

 DRING! DRING! DRING! DRING!

Jennifer snatches up the call. "Yes, it is Jardin Paisible. How can I help you?"

She is instantly shocked by what she hears. She rushes towards Johan, her expression pale. "Johan, something happened with Joseph at the school; he is now at the hospital. We have to go now."

Fear and worry immediately cloud Johan's face.
