Max's POV

The final boulder crashed down with a deafening echo that seemed to mock my desperation.

She was trapped.

Those captivating amber eyes that had looked straight into my soul were now buried behind tons of stone. In the span of a single heartbeat, my entire world had collapsed.

I stood motionless before the sealed passage, my wolf equally stunned. The afternoon sun beat down on my shoulders, yet I felt nothing but arctic cold spreading through my veins. A foreign sensation clawed its way up from somewhere deep inside me.

She remained down there. Not alone, but surrounded by countless bloodthirsty creatures.

My ribcage expanded and contracted violently, each breath scraping against my throat like sandpaper, but oxygen refused to fill the gaping void her absence had carved in my chest. What was this overwhelming sensation? Every fiber of my being screamed to destroy something. To tear someone limb from limb.
