Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

Dodging to the left quickly, Princess Marina brought out a whip with jaggared edges from her pouch around her waist and aimed for the eyes of the nearest blackbirds in an arch. Summoning icicles with her half quarterstaff in her left hand, Princess Marina watched as the winged put up their barriers to protect themselves.

"Their barrier only covers part of their bodies." Princess Marina thought as her whip successfully got caught into two blackbirds eyes and she dragged her whip hard, successfully blinding them.

Tying her half quarterstaff to a hook on her belt, Princess Marina pulled out three small balls and threw two in the midst of the winged and one at the blackbirds and the instant the balls touched the ground, spikes shot out of the three balls simultaneously. To defend themselves, the blackbirds shielded themselves with their wings while the winged put up defensive barriers to block the spikes. Taking her chance caused by the distraction of the spikes, Princess Marina brought out a dagger and began to slit the throat of the winged closest to her. The spikes stopped shooting after five minutes and Princess Marina quickly untied the half quarterstaff with the clear white ore and pushed both the winged and the blackbirds back.

Looking upwards at the sky, Princess Marina saw the number 20 next to her name.

In the arena

The crowd roared as the third star of the empire slayed the winged and fought against the blackbirds.

"With Princess Marina impressive performance, the ranks have changed with only twenty minutes to go." the announcer said and the crowd roared in excitement.

"With no wasted movement, Princess Marina successfully slays one winged after the other as she successfully defends against the blackbirds and with nineteen minutes left the winged are dwindling by the second." The announcer said as the number next to Princess Marina's name continues to increase.

Under the canopy of the Royals.

"Truly a wonderful performance." The Marchioness said with a smile.

"But-" The Marchioness said, face suddenly going serious.

"Her body can't keep up with this level of performance." The Marchioness said as the blackbird blew ice from its wings and Princess Marina was slow in dodging them.

In the plains of Dracia

"Ten more winged, two blind blackbirds and two blackbirds without a scratch on them." Princess Marina thought as she rolled to escape a slab of ice.

"There is still so much to do." Princess Marina thought as the winged began to attack her too.

"What do I do to scare them?" Princess Marina thought as she jumped from one block of ice to another. Using the wind to create bullets, Princess Marina used the wind bullets as a distraction and conjured a huge block of ice to stab through the undefended part of two winged.

"What do I do to distract them just a little?" Princess Marina said as the ice from the blackbirds scratched her cheek and wrecked the side of her clothes.

Holding her side, Princess Marina unleashed the mist with twenty silhouettes inside and while the birds battled the silhouettes, Princess Marina unloaded her pouch and dug around for something useful. Scattering through her things frantically, Princess Marina quickly realized that all she had left were her frogs, a cotton towel and a dagger.

Cancelling the animation on one frog, Princess Marina squeezed the frog and the gell like substance poured on her cotton towel. Hoping that the gell like substance could burn like glue, Princess Marina removed the water ore from her half quarterstaff, folded the cotton material and began to rub the towel in between her hands. With every passing second, Princess Marina frantically rubbed the material in between her hands and when she began to give up hope just a little the material began to heat up. Holding her breath as the blackbirds and the winged were much closer now, Princess Marina continued rubbing the material in between her hands and once the cotton material caught fire, Princess Marina applied it to the wooden part of the half quarterstaff that she had removed the water ore from, muttered a few words and used a bit of the wind to make the fire burn. Turning around the second the birds came close to her, Princess Marina pointed the fire at them.

In the arena

"Fire" someone said as he watched Princess Marina with her makeshift torch.

"Fire." another said in shock.

"Did she just make fire?" someone said in amazement and a small number of people, not more than ten in number, got up from their seats in the stands and roared Princess Marina's name.

The small number of people roared Princess Marina's name not because she had managed to break a century long prejudice over night, nor because her feat of killing more than thirty winged in the hunt of the winged have never been seen before but because in a world where the benefits or the wonders of fire have been replaced and overlooked, taunted and spoken down on, there stood a princess, blessed by the spirit of fire with a flaming torch that hasn't been seen nor used in nearly two centuries in her hand.
