The next morning, Mei woke up at ten. She was wearing white pajamas, tossed her clothes into the washing machine, pressed the start button, and the machine immediately began to rumble. She sat cross-legged in front of it, arms wrapped around her shins. Mei watched the drum spin round and round like that bowl of fish noodles spinning, and spinning, just like her life, circling endlessly without clarity. Sunlight from the living room stretched all the way to her feet, warming her smooth, fair calves.
