Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The First Step Outside His Shadow.

"I mean, you don't have to go if you don't want to," Captian said quietly, his voice low. I immediately jumped up, my small face scrunching. "I want to go! Director Anderson, don't you dare change your mind." He gave a cold snort, eyes sharp like an eagle's as they swept over me. "If you don't want me to change my mind, then show some sincerity. Kiss me."

He meant voluntarily.

The moment I heard that, my head exploded, booboom, my face heating like fire. I stared at him in disbelief. This was practically the same as "sit on my lap and please me," and the shame nearly killed me. Swallowing hard, my face burning like a ripe apple, I stammered, "Director Anderson… why don't we eat first? It's getting cold…"

Captian raised a brow, his expression turning dangerously serious. The air in the office grew even colder. My spine stiffened. If I kept stalling, he might really transform into the demon king again. I didn't know whether he'd change his mind or worse. So I leaned forward, quickly pecked the corner of his lips, and immediately backed away, my whole face burning so intensely it felt like blood might drip from it.

Captian brushed his fingertips across his lips, the warmth of my kiss still lingering. For such a tiny kiss, it shouldn't have meant anything, yet he looked strangely pleased… like he tasted something addictive. Ridiculous.

He crossed his legs and said nothing. Did nothing.

I secretly watched him for a moment. When he didn't react, I relaxed and even let a small smile slip out. "Director Anderson, are you going back to the villa later?" I tilted my head; the light made my face glow even brighter.

He shook his head, he still had work to finish.

I wasn't sure if I should be relieved or disappointed, so I bit my lip. "Then I'll go back to the villa first… I'm a little tired."

He glanced at the clock, it was already past ten. He nodded without trying to keep me.

I cleaned up the table, picked up the lunch box, walked to the door, then paused. Feeling awkward, I whispered, "Um… Director Anderson, don't work too late. It's not good for your health. You should rest earlier."

Before he could react, I hurried out. I completely missed the faint smile that tugged at his lips behind me, a soft curve unlike any of his usual coldness, mockery, or danger.

Back in the car, I finally exhaled. I couldn't believe I just… cared about him. Where did that courage even come from? Ridiculous. Terrifying.

"Why did you stay so long, sister-in-law?" Ronan whistled shamelessly and gave me a lewd grin through the rearview mirror.

I rolled my eyes. "Because we were eating. Of course it took a bit. Oh right, take me to Hezze's hospital tomorrow morning. Director Anderson agreed to let me work there."

Screech...!

Ronan whipped his head around, staring at me like he'd just heard the sky fall. "Sister-in-law… what did you just say?"

I understood why he was shocked. Getting Captian to agree was practically impossible. He was the big boss of Alchimie. His decisions were absolute. No one had enough face to influence him. And yet… somehow I did. Maybe I was the first. Maybe I'd be the last.

"I said Director Anderson agreed to let me go to the hospital. Tomorrow's Sunday, I'll go check the place out." I said it openly, proud and glowing inside.

Ronan continued staring, mouth open, unable to form a proper sentence. Was this courage or recklessness? Most people didn't even dare breathe loudly in front of Captian, and she meaning me just said it? And he agreed immediately?

He finally raised his thumb, deeply impressed. "Sister-in-law, you're amazing. Tell me how did you convince Director Anderson?"

I blinked. "Maybe he was touched by love?"

Besides acting cute and clingy, I also told him about all the health benefits of therapeutic meals and how much I loved modern medicine. Wasn't that… touching him with love?

Ronan's expression crumbled.

Touched by love?

Director Anderson?

 Touched?

He stared at me, face full of complicated disbelief. "Sister-in-law… are you sure you're not misunderstanding Director Anderson?"

If she told him she seduced Captian in bed, he might believe that. But touching him with love?? Impossible.

Seeing his expression twist like he swallowed a fly, I frowned. "Ronan, what's wrong with you?"

He snapped out of it and forced a laugh. "Nothing, just shocked. Haha…"

I narrowed my eyes. This wasn't shock. This was his brain melting.

All of Captian's subordinates were strange.

I stopped thinking about it and leaned back, closing my eyes.

After about thirty minutes, the car reached the villa. Since I hadn't eaten much at his office, the moment I stepped inside, I rushed into the kitchen looking for food. I found some fruits and vegetables and ate them happily.

Upstairs, I called Hezze for the hospital address. Tomorrow, Ronan would drive me there.

Even as the car pulled up to the hospital entrance the next day, Ronan still looked dazed. He had thought about it all night, convinced I'd been joking. Now, seeing reality, he was shaken to the core.

"Sister-in-law, if anything happens, call me right away. I'll rush in and beat whoever dares bully you," he said seriously while opening the door for me.

I nearly rolled my eyes, but I still nodded. "Okay."

The moment I stepped inside, Hezze rushed over and hugged me tightly. Her pretty face was full of excitement. "Rosy! I can't believe Director Anderson agreed. He really cares about you."

I didn't dare nod. "Impossible. I just bribed him a little."

Hezze held my face, looking at me like I was the world's biggest fool.

Bribe?

Director Anderson, who had tasted every luxury imaginable?

Did she think the world was stupid?

"Rosy, have you misunderstood your own charm? Or misunderstood Director Anderson?" She sighed. Seeing my clueless expression, she knew I still hadn't caught on.

Someone with enough charm to move Director Anderson… and she didn't even know it.

"Alright, enough about him. Didn't you say you're taking over the internal medicine specialist's work temporarily?"

The smell of disinfectant filled the air, clean, sterile, familiar. My heart sped up with excitement. "Take me to the office! Quickly!"

Just thinking of working in a real hospital made my eyes shine like stars.

Hezze immediately switched to work mode. I secretly let out a sigh of relief.

Talking about Captian… was something I really didn't like. Deep down, I still resented and feared him too much.
