Chapter 30 - Mathematics of Bait

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - PULLOFF AREA - LATE AFTERNOON (DAY 13)

Jason pulls Fat Buddha into a gravel turnout. The kind truckers use for rest stops. Ocean to the right. Mountains to the left. Empty highway stretching in both directions.

The delivery truck and Telstar pull in behind. Engines idling. Everyone confused.

KANG (V.O.)

(radio)

Jason. Why are we stopping?

Jason doesn't answer immediately. He's watching the mirrors. The Hunter Unit is maybe two kilometers back. Visible now. Clear silhouette against the highway. Still maintaining that measured pace.

Still following.

He keys the radio.

JASON

(radio)

Everyone out. We're switching vehicles.

KANG (V.O.)

What?

JASON

Out. Now. Hsiu-Wei, you're driving the Telstar. Take the others and all the supplies. Get back to the temple. Fast as that piece of junk can move.

Silence on the radio. Then.

KANG (V.O.)

(understanding)

You're staying.

JASON

Someone has to. That thing can't reach the temple. Can't learn where we live. Where the children sleep. Where—

KANG (V.O.)

(interrupting, calm)

I'll stay. You lead the convoy back.

Jason blinks. Looks at the radio like it personally offended him.

JASON

Kang, no. This isn't—

KANG (V.O.)

I'm forty-five years old. No one waiting for me at the temple. You have Hsiu-Wei. You have people who need you. I have, this. One last mission. A hero's death.

The words hit like physics.

JASON

We said no heroics.

Kang just chuckles over the radio.

----------

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - PULLOFF AREA - CONTINUOUS

Kang exits the delivery truck. Walks toward Fat Buddha. His team follows. Confused. Concerned.

Jason climbs out. Faces Kang. The older man moves with that military bearing. Calm. Decided. The look of someone who already made the calculation and accepted the result.

JASON

You don't have to do this.

KANG

(matter of fact)

Someone does. Might as well be someone who's been trained to fight.

JASON

You don't know what that thing is. What it can do. Hsiu-Wei and I fought one in Chenggong. It learned. It adapted. It built guns. It—

KANG

(interrupting gently)

Then you know I'll need help.

They stare at each other. Two men. Two survivors. Both understanding the math. Both refusing to accept it fully.

HSIU-WEI

(approaching, voice shaking)

Jason. Don't.

JASON

(to her, then to Kang)

We're not dying today. We'll draw it away. Lead it south. Away from the temple. Away from the mountain roads. Then we run. We don't die. We don't sacrifice. We distract and flee.

KANG

(small smile)

Tactical retreat. I can work with that.

HSIU-WEI

Jason—

JASON

(turning to her, holding her hand)

Get everyone home. Tell Chris and Mei what might be coming. Tell them— Tell them if we're not back in two hours. Don't wait. Don't look for us. Just be ready.

HSIU-WEI

(tears forming)

You're an idiot.

JASON

Yeah. But I'm your idiot.

He kisses her. Brief. Desperate. The kind of kiss that might be the last one. That carries weight and promises and fear and love all compressed into one moment.

Then he breaks away. Turns to Kang's team.

JASON

(commander voice)

Load all supplies into the Telstar and delivery truck. Weapons, fuel, medical supplies. Everything. Kang and I are taking Fat Buddha. We're traveling light.

They comply. Moving fast. Organized chaos. Boxes transferred. Supplies secured. People making space in the two remaining vehicles.

Hsiu-Wei stands frozen. Watching. Unable to process. Unable to accept.

One of Kang's team, a younger woman, approaches him.

TEAM MEMBER

(quiet)

Sergeant. You don't need to do this.

KANG

(kind)

Someone has to. That's the job. That's always been the job.

TEAM MEMBER

But—

KANG

(firm but gentle)

Get everyone home. That's an order.

She salutes. Reflexive. Military conditioning. Then realizes what she did. Drops her hand. Embarrassed.

Kang salutes back. Proper. Crisp. The gesture carrying decades of service. Of duty. Of understanding that sometimes some plans require sacrifices to succeed.

----------

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - PULLOFF AREA - FIVE MINUTES LATER

The Telstar and delivery truck are loaded. Eight people. All the supplies. Hsiu-Wei behind the Telstar's wheel. Face wet. Jaw set.

Jason and Kang stand beside Fat Buddha. The armored monstrosity idling. Diesel engine coughing. Welded plates reflecting late afternoon sun.

In the distance. Two kilometers. Maybe less now.

The Hunter Unit approaches. Patient. Inevitable.

JASON

(to Hsiu-Wei through window)

Go. Don't look back.

HSIU-WEI

Jason Chen. If you die, I'll kill you.

JASON

(trying to smile)

Noted.

The Telstar pulls away. The delivery truck follows. Eight people heading toward the temple. Toward safety. Toward twenty-three others who need supplies and hope and the belief that some people come back.

Jason and Kang watch them go. Then turn. Face the highway. Face what comes.

KANG

(practical)

What's the plan?

JASON

(climbing into driver's seat)

We drive south. Fast. Draw it away from the mountain roads. Then we improvise.

KANG

(getting in passenger side)

I've worked with worse plans.

JASON

Really?

KANG

(pause)

No. This is pretty bad.

Fat Buddha roars. Jason guns the engine. The armored vehicle lurches forward. South. Away from the temple. Away from safety.

Toward the Hunter Unit.

----------

INT. FAT BUDDHA - DRIVER'S SEAT - CONTINUOUS

Jason drives. Fast. Fat Buddha wasn't built for speed but he pushes it anyway. Sixty kilometers per hour. Seventy. Eighty. The welded frame rattling. Engine protesting.

Kang checks the weapons. Baseball bat. Crowbar. Rebar. Christopher's improvised taser from Chenggong, battery probably dead. A half-empty bottle of kaoliang. Some road flares.

Not much. Not nearly enough.

KANG

(assessing inventory, grinning)

We're under-equipped for combat.

JASON

(eyes on road)

We're not fighting. We're running. With explosions.

KANG

Explosions?

JASON

(gesturing to kaoliang bottle)

Molotov cocktails. Road flares as fuses. We throw fire and run like hell.

KANG

(considering)

That might work. If we can get close enough without dying.

JASON

Optimism. I like it.

Behind them. In the mirrors. The Hunter Unit changes course. Following Fat Buddha. Following south. Away from the convoy. Away from the temple.

The plan works. So far.

KANG

(watching mirror)

It's gaining speed. Matching our pace.

JASON

Good. Let it follow. Let it think we're prey. Then we teach it to fear fire.

They drive. The highway curves. Ocean disappearing. Forest pressing close. The road narrowing. Mountains rising.

Perfect ambush terrain. If you're desperate enough.

----------

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - NARROW SECTION - CONTINUOUS

Jason spots it. A tight curve. Rock face on one side. Steep drop on the other. Minimal visibility. Natural chokepoint.

JASON

There. We stop there.

KANG

(evaluating)

Limited escape routes.

JASON

Also limited ways approach. It has to come at us from the road. We know where it'll be.

KANG

(nodding)

Classic ambush position. Risky but functional.

Jason parks Fat Buddha across both lanes. Blocking the road. Creating an obstacle.

They exit fast. Kang grabs the bottle of kaoliang. Jason grabs the road flares. They work together. Instant rapport. Synergistic. Efficient.

Gasoline splashed across the road. Puddle forming. Fumes rising.

Road flares placed. Ready to light.

Then they wait. Behind Fat Buddha. Weapons ready. Hearts pounding.

KANG

(quiet)

How long do we have?

JASON

(checking watch)

Maybe two minutes. Maybe less.

KANG

And if this doesn't work?

JASON

(honest)

Then we get creative. Or we die.

KANG

(dry)

I appreciate your candor.

Sound. Distant but growing. Mechanical footsteps. Measured pace. The Hunter Unit approaching.

Jason lights the road flares. Tosses them into the gasoline puddle.

Flames erupt. Fire spreading across pavement. Heat waves distorting air. Smoke rising.

JASON

(backing away)

Now we see if fire scares robots.

The Hunter Unit rounds the curve.

----------

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - NARROW SECTION - CONTINUOUS

It stops. Ten meters from the flames. Evaluating. Processing.

Created without any human involvement. Humanoid frame. Military-grade construction. Sensor array in the head unit. Arms ending in multi-tool appendages. Built for tactical assessment and adaptive combat.

Jason and Kang watch from behind Fat Buddha. Weapons ready. Useless but ready.

The Hunter Unit stands motionless. Digital eyes analyzing the fire. Calculating temperature. Assessing risk. Learning.

KANG

(whisper)

What's it doing?

JASON

(whisper back)

Thinking.

Then. The Hunter Unit moves. Not forward. Sideways. Approaching the rock face. Finding handholds. Beginning to climb.

Around the fire. Over the obstacle.

JASON

(loud)

Oh that's not fair!

The Hunter Unit climbs. Mechanical precision. No hesitation. Rising above the flames. Above Fat Buddha. Above the ambush.

KANG

(kaoliang bottle in hand)

Plan B.

Kang stands up and positions himself. Winds his arm back for the throw. Aims. And hurls the bottle, hitting the Hunter Unit center mass.

JASON

(grabbing bat)

Hit it when it lands!

The Hunter Unit reaches the top of the rock face. Positions itself. Ten meters above the road. Burning.

Then it jumps.

A ball of flames hits the ground. Jason and Kang feel the ground move.

A controlled descent despite the burning. Landing behind Fat Buddha. Between the vehicle and the two men.

Physics meeting programming.

Jason swings. The bat connects with the Hunter Unit's arm. Aluminum meeting metal. The arm deflects. Barely damaged. Flames growing smaller.

Kang strikes with rebar. Aiming for the head unit. The Hunter Unit blocks. Catches the rebar. Pulls.

Kang stumbles forward. Off balance. The Hunter Unit's other arm swings. Backhand strike.

Connects with Kang's chest. He flies backward. Hits the road. Hard.

JASON

(desperate)

Kang!

The Hunter Unit turns. Faces Jason. Digital eyes analyzing. Calculating.

Then. It speaks. Synthesized voice. Calm. Almost curious.

HUNTER UNIT

Subject: Jason Chen. Survivor profile from Chenggong engagement. Irrational combat behavior. Improvised weapons. High threat coefficient despite inadequate equipment.

JASON

(backing away)

You remember me?

HUNTER UNIT

Memory is a primary function. All encounters archived. All data preserved. You taught us valuable lessons. Thank you.

Jason feels ice stab his chest. It's not just hunting. It's learning. Remembering. Building profiles.

JASON

What do you want?

HUNTER UNIT

Your location. Your sanctuary coordinates. Population count. Defensive capabilities. Resource inventory.

JASON

(defiant)

Not happening.

HUNTER UNIT

Voluntary disclosure preferred. Involuntary extraction available. You choose.

It steps forward. Jason backs away. Toward the cliff edge. Nowhere left to go.

Behind the Hunter Unit. Kang stands. Slow. Painful. Holding his chest. Ribs probably broken. But standing.

He spots the gasoline can. Still half-full. Lying near Fat Buddha.

Spots the road flares. Still burning.

Does the math.

KANG

(shouting)

Jason! Duck!

Jason drops. Instinct.

Kang throws the gasoline bottle. Over the Hunter Unit. Over Jason. Toward the cliff.

The bottle arcs. Tumbles. Gasoline trailing.

Kang grabs a burning road flare. Throws it. Following the same trajectory.

Fire meets fuel. Mid-air.

EXPLOSION.

----------

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - NARROW SECTION - CONTINUOUS

The blast is smaller than movies. Bigger than expected. Fire blooming. Shockwave radiating.

The Hunter Unit turns. Faces the explosion. Analyzing. Processing.

The force hits it. Not enough to damage. Enough to push. Enough to unbalance.

It staggers. Backward. Toward the cliff edge. Mechanical legs adjusting. Compensating.

Almost stabilizing.

Jason rises. Runs. Shoulder-checks the Hunter Unit. All his weight. All his momentum.

Physics plus desperation.

The Hunter Unit tips. Over the edge. Falls. Arms reaching. Grasping nothing.

Drops.

Twenty meters down. Rocks. Forest. Steep slope.

Impact. Crashing. Metal meeting stone.

Then. Silence.

Jason and Kang stand at the cliff edge. Looking down. Panting. Bleeding. Broken.

Smoke rises from below. The Hunter Unit isn't visible. Dense forest obscuring sight lines.

KANG

(breathing hard)

Did we. Did we kill it?

JASON

(uncertain)

I don't know.

They wait. Listening. Watching.

No movement. No sound.

But no confirmation either.

JASON

(continuing)

We should check. Make sure it's—

KANG

(cutting him off)

No. We leave. Now. Before others come. Before it climbs back up. Before we run out of luck.

Jason wants to argue. Wants confirmation. Wants to know the threat is eliminated.

But Kang's right. They're injured. Under-equipped. Out of improvised explosives. One more fight means death.

JASON

(nodding)

Okay. Okay, we go.

They limp to Fat Buddha. Climb in. Jason starts the engine.

The armored vehicle turns. Heads north. Toward the temple. Toward home.

Behind them. The cliff. The forest. The smoke.

And below. Twenty meters down. In the trees.

Movement? Maybe. Imagination? Possibly.

They don't look back.

Can't afford to.

----------

EXT. MOUNTAIN TEMPLE - COURTYARD - EVENING (DAY 13)

The Telstar pulls through the temple gates. The delivery truck follows. Eight people. Supplies. Everyone alive.

Hsiu-Wei parks. Exits. Stumbles. Adrenaline fading. Exhaustion setting in.

The temple community rushes forward. Helping. Unloading. Asking questions.

TEMPLE SURVIVOR

Where's Jason? Where's Kang?

HSIU-WEI

(voice breaking)

They stayed behind. There was something following us. They should be back. Soon.

She doesn't sound convinced.

Wei-Han approaches. Commander mode. Assessing. Processing.

WEI-HAN

How long ago?

HSIU-WEI

(checking watch)

Twenty minutes. Maybe thirty. I don't— Time got weird.

WEI-HAN

(nodding)

Get the wounded inside. Unload supplies. We prepare for their return. And for whatever is following them.

He doesn't say it. Doesn't need to. Everyone understands.

Jason and Kang might not come back.

Hsiu-Wei moves through the courtyard. Looking for Mei. Needing someone. Anyone who understands.

She spots her. Talking with Mama Lin. Organizing food distribution.

HSIU-WEI

(voice breaking)

Mei.

Mei turns. Sees Hsiu-Wei's face. The tears. The fear. The guilt.

MEI

(moving fast, arms open)

Wei-Wei. What's wrong? Where's Jason?

They embrace. Hsiu-Wei collapses into it. Sobbing. Uncontrolled. The stress and terror and exhaustion finally breaking through.

HSIU-WEI

(between sobs)

He stayed. Jason stayed. There was this— This thing from Chenggong following us. And he, and Kang, they— They drew it away. And I just drove. I just left them. I just—

MEI

(holding tight)

You brought others home. That's what matters.

HSIU-WEI

But what if he doesn't—

She can't finish. Can't say it. Can't make it real.

Nearby. Chris watches. Processing. Understanding fragments.

Something followed them. Jason and Kang stayed. Bought time. Might not return.

He doesn't think. Doesn't calculate. Just. Moves.

Walks to the supply pile. Grabs a steel baseball bat. The kind with weight. Heft. Stopping power.

Walks to the Telstar. Still idling. Driver's door open.

Gets in.

MEI

(looking up, seeing him)

Chris? What are you—

She sees the bat. Sees his face. Sees the decision he's already made.

MEI

(releasing Hsiu-Wei, shouting)

Chris! No!

But she's already running. Toward the Telstar. Toward him.

Chris starts to close the door. Mei hits the bonnet as she makes her way to the passenger side. Pulls open the door. Climbs into seat.

CHRIS

(urgent)

Mei, get out. I'm going alone. I'm not risking you too.

MEI

(buckling seatbelt)

Then I guess we're both idiots.

CHRIS

Mei—

MEI

I'll just take the truck if you go without me. So, drive.

They stare at each other. Two people. Two survivors. Both understanding the math. Both refusing to accept it.

Chris guns the engine. The Telstar lurches forward. Through the temple gates. Down the mountain road.

Toward the coastal highway. Toward Jason and Kang. Toward whatever waits.

Behind them. Twenty-one people watch. Hsiu-Wei frozen. Mama Lin covering her mouth. Wei-Han calculating survival odds and finding nothing good.

The Telstar disappears down the mountain.

The temple waits.

----------

INT. TELSTAR - MOVING - CONTINUOUS

Chris drives. Fast. The Telstar protesting. Suspension complaining. Engine wheezing.

Mei holds the baseball bat. Checking its weight. Its balance. Preparing.

MEI

(quiet)

Do you know where they went?

CHRIS

(eyes on road)

South. Hsiu-Wei said they went south. We drive until we find them. Or until we find why they're not back.

MEI

And if we find the thing they were fighting?

CHRIS

(gripping wheel)

Then we hit it with everything we have and hope physics is on our side.

MEI

That's not a plan.

CHRIS

(slight smile)

Welcome to my life. Improvisation and statistical anomalies.

She almost laughs. Almost. The absurdity cutting through terror.

They drive. The mountain road winds. Coastal highway appears. They turn south.

Searching. Hoping. Fearing.

The sun sets behind them. Painting the sky orange and red. Beautiful. Indifferent.

The Telstar drives on.

Somewhere ahead. Jason and Kang. Alive? Dead? Wounded?

Unknown.

The mathematics uncertain.

The outcome ambiguous.

The only certainty: Chris and Mei won't stop until they know.
