"You mean the test result is negative?" Lara asked, as if she couldn't read the report herself. Her eyes welled up with tears as she glanced at the report again. She was holding it, staring at it but still asked the doctor the question anyways.
Dr JJ Smart nodded calmly. She knows the feeling of such expectation, especially from someone who'd been expecting and looking forward to getting a positive test report. She's a woman, and a mother. That feeling has never been a pleasant one.
"Yes, Mrs Blake. You're not pregnant yet, the test result is negative" she replied calmly. She saw Lara's teary eyes and stretched her hands, taking hers and giving it a soft squeeze.
"You mean I'm not pregnant?" Lara asked again. She was all excited that morning. Her period was delayed by a day. She'd always wish that her period didn't just come late but missed for the next nine months.
She got ready quickly, skipping breakfast in excitement because she wants to get to the hospital and have the test done. And now, she found out that she's not pregnant. How can she not be pregnant again, it's two years of being married, and she is still not pregnant?
Giving her hand a soft squeeze, Dr JJ Smart comforted her "Everything will be alright Mrs Blake. I believe you will be pregnant soon. You're still young and you are a fertile woman, you'll definitely be pregnant" she encouraged her.
She watched as Lara's tears gave way, cascading seamlessly down her cheeks. Her eyes had gone reddened and disappointment flushed down her face. The excited looks were gone, replaced with those of despondency.
"What is wrong with me,Dr? Am I ever going to be a mother?" Lara inquired, her hope had just gotten shattered. She's young but barren. If no one was saying it to her face, she knows she's barren.
Mike isn't complaining at all. He doesn't seem to be worried a bit about her inability to get pregnant. He'd always told her that everything will fall into place at the right time.
But Sara isn't happy that she hasn't been able to give her a grandchild. Besides Sara, she's not happy herself. She'd always loved kids and looked forward to having her own kids someday.
"...are you listening to me Mrs Blake?" Dr JJ Smart asked, seeing how far away Lara was. She'd asked her if she would ever be a mother but it appears as if she had trailed off before she could ever get a response from her.
Still, Lara didn't hear what Dr JJ said to her until the older woman tightened the squeeze and Lara snapped out of her thoughts. She glanced at Dr JJ Smart and knew she'd lost out on her response.
"I'm sorry Dr.." she apologised as Dr JJ quickly took a tissue and offered it to her. Lara took it and cleaned her tears. She sniffled and tried holding back her tears.
She'd used to those tears every month whenever her period started but she'd thought she wasn't going to shed them that month again. And here she is, with a negative test report again.
"It's alright Mrs Lara. There isn't anything wrong with you at all. You're perfectly fine medically and I know you'll become a mother soon" Dr JJ Smart comforted.
Lara nodded. She'd always been told that she's medically alright and yet, she couldn't get pregnant. Mike is alright too. So why couldn't she carry his baby after two years of being married?
She stood up and wanted to leave when Dr JJ suggested "Maybe you could consider an artificial insemination"
That word from Dr JJ Smart lightened Lara's mood. This is the first ray of hope that Lara has received in several months now. She had become worried after a year of her marriage without a child and hearing about insemination now, she felt her days of tears were about to end.
All she needed to do was discuss things with Mike. She's sure he would support her through it. He would be more than willing to have the baby with her through this method, after all, she'll be carrying the baby herself.
As she drove in her car, she wiped away her tears. She'd been a housewife because Mike insisted that she should be. He was capable of footing the bills of the home and he'd lived up to expectation.
She'll just return home and wait for Mike. She'll have words with him and hopefully he agrees. They could start immediately.
As she drove into her compound, she was surprised to find Mike's car still parked in the parking lot. She was going to wonder why he was still home rather than being at work when she remembered that that day was a holiday.
That's perfect. She would be able to discuss things with him as soon as possible. She parked her car and took her handbag, walking briskly towards the apartment.
She pushed the door open and stepped in. He wasn't in the sitting room but she saw a familiar feminine wrist watch fall on the floor. She picked it up, this looks like Tolu's wristwatch.
Tolu hadn't been feeling well for a few days now, Mike told her. She'll visit her later in the day and discuss the insemination with her.
Had Mike brought it home by mistake? Her friend and husband are colleagues at work and they are always so fond of each other. Anyways, she placed it on the glass table. She'll return it to her,if it belonged to her.
She went towards the bedroom when she started hearing faint sounds of moans. Lara could understand that sound, a married woman like her would definitely do.
But why is the sound coming from the master bedroom?
As she drew closer, the sound became louder and the voice was more familiar than she'd thought. Now Lara's heart was beating very fast, she walked faster, eager to know who the hell was there.
And what the fuck they're doing in her bedroom and possibly on her matrimonial bed. Hastily she got to the door and found it unlocked. From the door, she got a good view of the scene playing before her.
Lara's jaw dropped and her handbag fell off her hands with the noise that alerted the lovers that they've got an intruder…
