Kayla opened the door, and sighed when she came face to face with Lara.
Lara immediately held out her hands. "Listen to me, please. Let me talk to you. Just talk. Please don't shut the door."
There was enough desperation in Lara's voice that made Kayla stop. She stared at her friend for a long while, her expression thoughtful as she tried to decide if she wanted to listen to Lara's explanation or not.
Lara wringed her hands together. "Please."
Kayla sighed. "Fine. Come in."
The relief that wove into Lara's bones as her friend left the door open for her was instantaneous, and she quickly walked in before Kayla could change her mind.
They made their way to the living room, sitting on opposite couches as they held each other's gaze.
"Out with it, Lara," Kayla quipped. Lara closed her eyes, inhaled, exhaled, and opened her eyes.
Then she spoke.
"I am sorry." Kayla raised her eyebrows at Lara, but she didn't say anything. Lara went on.
