Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Soulmates

"The term 'mate' is short for Soulmate," Jace begins. We've left the boys in the kitchen and are sitting on the couch in the living room. "In the Vampire Society, it is believed that everyone has a Mate, on rare occasions, two. Mates tend to share a strong bond and some, like the ancient Greeks, believed that Mates started out as one creature. A creature with four arms, four legs, and 2 heads, but the gods thought they were too powerful and separated them."

"And I have three?"

"Yes and no. Marco counts as one person." That doesn't make sense. If they counted as one person, why was the spark different for each one? And why did Mr. Masters protest them taking me? I'm grateful, but I'm pretty sure he hates me.

"I seriously doubt he hates you, Ana. He did take you in after turning you. He could have just left you to deal with this on your own."

"You said I should talk to your grandma, the Crone?" He nods at me. "Mr. Masters said we're going to talk to her Saturday. Why do I have to wait? You'd think he's want to know why he Turned me as soon as possible. "

"He wants to make sure you'll have control of yourself surrounded by Humans. You're fine with just me, because I'm just one. In a room full of us, you could be easily distracted by what you smell, or even hear."

"Hear? What could I hear that would make me lose control?"

Jace smiles at me, "You have yet to truly experience the Thirst. Once you do, you'll understand completely."

I literally feel when Mr. Masters enters the room. Jace looks past me and makes eye contact with him.

"Is it time, sir?"

"Time for what?" I ask. "And how do you know so much, Jace? I know you said you're a Witch, but why do you know so much about Vampires?"

"Because Grandma knew I'd need the knowledge. And time for you to feed. You haven't yet today. As a Newborn you'll need to feed daily, your body is still undergoing changes. Skipping a day wont kill you, but it'll make you really uncomfortable."

A hand touches my arm, I felt it coming so I don't jump, too much. I turn to Mr. Masters.

"I don't want to hurt anyone..." He looks into my eyes. Surprisingly, he doesn't seem irritated at all. I can actually see an understanding in them. His hand moves to cup my cheek as I feel my body going limp. Oh, I guess he's knocking me out again...
