Chapter 20 - A day in the village

[Cast: Dark Flashstep]

A strange, black aura emitted. It was coming from the basic-looking boy. In an instant, he was no longer being held by the red-haired boy.

He stepped atop the air, using the shadow energy shooting out of his feet, and drop-kicked Julian.

"Ack!"

Julian fell to the floor. Without hesitation, the red-haired boy ran toward Julian, restraining him.

"What the- Damn it!"

Haa… Umilythe gave me way too much confidence. Is it wrong to say that I'm missing her right about now?

The basic-looking boy who originally looked sad and docile, had this wicked look on his face. He searched Julian voraciously. Of course, to no avail.

"You're kidding me…" the basic boy said.

"Shit. This guy's poorer than us. Now I actually feel bad," the red-haired boy said.

You… really don't have to insult me like that. Stupid brat.

Before Julian knew it, he was taken to the orphanage.

"This is where you guys live?" Julian asked.

"Obviously. My name is Rar. My brother's name is Sodror. I'll take you to the medic, since I do feel a little bad."

Julian was walked to a separate room. He stood in front of a doctor and was promptly told to lie down on a bed.

The doctor lifted his hand, hovering it over Julian's solar plexus.

"Looks like those two didn't rough you up too bad. Heh. You're all healthy, Sonny. No disease. Slight bruising on your foot, but it's nothing severe," the doctor said confidently.

Did they get me checked up because they thought I was some dirty rat?!

"Of course, I'm assuming you're not just here for the analysis, right? You'll also be taking the Physical."

"I'm… not so familiar with that term, doctor."

"The Physical just checks how fit you are."

"I guess that'll be fine, then."

"Okay! Come here around tomorrow."

Julian left the room. He had a whole day to do whatever he'd like. Most of his time here was spent as a slave, so he really intended to enjoy this day.

The first thing he stopped at was a bakery on the corner of a street. This was something he was at the very least familiar with.

Upon opening the door, a bell rang. Thankfully, nobody turned to see who was entering. Julian was glad for this.

With the money that the brothers had given Julian because they felt bad, he ordered two croissants. They were crescent-shaped and doughy, just like the ones back home. Without wasting time, he took a seat and got to eating.

"For a small village… this place seems quite packed."

Sitting next to a window, Julian could see out onto the street. Horses pulled carriages, and people in wealthy clothing traversed.

"The physical is tomorrow. It makes sense."

"Huh?"

Julian turned his head. The feminine voice came from in front of him. Two girls stood, the one on the right spoke.

The one on the right was an elven girl, as shown by the sharp ears that protruded from her sides. Her hair was long and blonde, with almost radiantly green eyes. A brighter smile was plastered across her face.

Besides her, was a much quieter-looking girl. She was also an elf. Her hair was silver, though not as long as the girl's beside her, falling just a few inches below her chin. Dark blue eyes that would peer through one's soul. It was oddly reminiscent to Oscar. Julian shuddered.

That blonde is beautiful… goodness. If I had not met Umilythe, I would've thought she was the most beautiful girl ever, and completely lost my composure!

Not saying that Umilythe is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.

"Well, I know that. But all these people for one simple physical?" Julian asked.

"This physical is important. It measures several things, like mana potency, physical strength, endurance, and all that good stuff. To get into a good academy, or be drafted into a high rank in the army, you'd need something like that!" The blonde one explained.

Wow. And that doctor just gave me entry for free?

"My name's Lyrei, by the way. And this is Silva. It's nice to meet you. I assumed you were here for the Physical, but I guess not?"

Silva, because her hair is silver. Her parents are incredibly unimaginative.

"Julian. It's nice to meet you as well, I'll… definitely remember your name, heh…"

"Don't get ahead of yourself, Julian!" Rar stormed into the bakery.

"Eh-?"

He was grabbed by the collar, pulling Julian up out of his seat. Julian's shoes slid against the ground. He did not try to resist.

"What's with that tone? Will you remember her name? Heh? Seems like you're getting too comfortable!"

Oh… he's right. I came off far too wanting.

But why the hell do you care?! Piss off!

Of course, I'll only say that in my head.

"R-Relax, Rar."

"Rar, stop it. He's new here," Lyrei had to intervene.

Rar grumbled, "I'm aware."

It wasn't till a few seconds later that he dropped Julian. Julian collapsed into his seat. He panted, before regulating his breath.

"What's up with that?"

"He has a crush on Lyrei," Silva remarked.

"No he doesn't! Stop that, Silva."
