Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE — SHADOWS OF HIGH SCHOOL

The streets of New York glistened with recent rainfall, reflections of streetlights dancing on wet pavement as Avery Harper and her friends walked toward their favorite café. The air smelled faintly of coffee and baked bread, mingling with the city's usual electric energy. It should have been a comforting evening stroll, but Avery's mind replayed the note and the fleeting figure outside her studio.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Chloe asked, her voice soft yet insistent as she fell into step beside Avery.

Avery smiled faintly, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead. "I'm fine. Just… thinking."

Daniel nudged her playfully. "Thinking is dangerous, you know. Might overheat the genius brain." He grinned, but his eyes were sharp, scanning their surroundings as if anticipating a shadow.

Ethan's hands were in his coat pockets, shoulders relaxed but posture alert. "Better to be careful than overconfident," he said quietly, his voice carrying a weight Avery found both grounding and unnerving.

*********

As they reached the café, Avery's phone buzzed again. Another text, unsigned:

> "Some truths can't be hidden forever. Remember who you once knew."

A chill ran down her spine. The words transported her back to high school — to a boy she had admired silently, a secret crush she had never confessed, and a friendship that had ended abruptly. Could this note be about him? Or worse… someone who had never truly left her past behind?

Chloe noticed her hesitation. "High school ghosts?" she asked teasingly, though her eyes carried concern.

Avery laughed lightly, masking tension. "Something like that."

Daniel, ever observant, frowned. "Avery, this is serious. We can joke, but these notes… they're targeted. Someone knows details only a few people could."

Chloe found a corner to sketch on her tablet, balancing freelance designs with coffee cups and laughter from the baristas. Her subplot was one of ambition and distraction — juggling career aspirations while remaining a supportive friend.

Daniel, meanwhile, approached a young man who had overheard their conversation. Through light, casual chatter, Daniel subtly probed if anyone had noticed suspicious behavior at the gallery. His quick thinking and charm were small but crucial — another layer of their collective defense.

Ethan quietly observed, noting a man sitting alone by the window who seemed too interested in their table. Avery felt a flicker of fear but also a strange pull toward Ethan's calm presence. The tension between fear and fascination stirred her heartbeat.

*********

When Ethan moved slightly closer, brushing a damp strand of Avery's hair from her face, she felt warmth rush through her chest. It was unspoken — a connection developing amid danger and uncertainty. She realized she trusted him instinctively, more than anyone else in the room.

Ethan's voice broke the moment. "If someone's targeting you… I won't let it go unnoticed," he said softly, eyes locking with hers.

Avery nodded, unsure whether her heart raced from fear, relief, or something else entirely.

As they sipped coffee, Avery shared fragments of her high school memories, careful to omit personal details. Yet the notes, the shadows, and the lingering threats made every recollection feel charged, vulnerable.

Daniel tried to lighten the mood with jokes about their past, but his own concern occasionally slipped through. Chloe, ever perceptive, noted the subtle shifts in Avery's expressions — fear, nostalgia, and a budding awareness of Ethan's presence in her life.

The café seemed safe, warm, yet Avery couldn't shake the sensation of being watched. Every laugh and casual conversation felt slightly off, like a performance under unseen eyes.

*********

As they prepared to leave, Avery's phone buzzed again. A photo appeared — a picture of the gallery, taken last night, with the note clearly visible on the floor.

Her breath caught. "Someone… was watching us," she whispered.

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Closer than we thought."

Chloe and Daniel exchanged glances, the tension settling over them like a shadowy cloud. Even the city's bustling life outside the café couldn't drown the unease creeping through their group.

Avery realized, with a shiver, that the past she thought was buried had found her — and it wasn't finished yet.
