"The ground shook when they ran." Sir Alex continued. 

"EXCUSE ME?!" That really is from chapter twenty, those first demon beast who came from a rift and from a distant dungeon.

"They tore through my men… twenty-seven knights… died screaming under their claws."

The clinic went silent. Healers bowed their heads.

Villagers at the doorway covered their mouths. Even Coffi quietly sniffled.

Sir Alex's voice cracked slightly as he spoke about the battle—blood spraying, men pulled apart, death all around him, blood covered the dirt, armor breaking, the smell of burning flesh, the pain of losing comrades, hopelessness and terror.

I swallowed, anger crawling up my spine. "This isn't supposed to happen yet," I muttered darkly. "The Elven Forest should've held the line. The forest people should've driven them back. THIS IS OFF-SCRIPT."

Everyone in the room blinked.

"Script?" Madam Florence whispered.
