"What is it?" Fiona was instantly at my shoulder, as if she'd sensed my breath catching.

I snapped the notebook shut, much too hastily. "Nothing," I said, my voice sounding like glass set down too quickly on a table. "Just... nothing."

The note was now deep in my backpack, wedged between papers and my lunch box. But just knowing it was there made my body tingle, as if I were wearing it directly against my skin. Every breath reminded me that it existed. That someone had placed it there. That someone knew exactly how close they could come without touching.

Jonas raised an eyebrow. "I hate when everything feels like theater. If he wants something, he should say it. Person to person." He bit into his apple, but the bite sounded harder than it should have. The sound cut through the air like a swift blow.
