Synopsis
Trained since childhood by the Magic Ministry of Defense, elite mage operatives were never meant to wage war on other nations. Their duty was to stop the monsters pouring from dungeons around the world. But governments twisted their purpose. During an infiltration mission in the collapsing nation of Fria, the protagonist and his squad discover a stolen nuclear weapon. Before they can stop it, the warhead detonates underground, killing everyone. He expects nothingness. Instead, he wakes up to a girl shaking him awake in a world he has never seen. A world with magic, yes, but without nations driven by hatred. Without torture camps. Without political manipulation. But the past does not stay buried. The spells he trained with they still respond to him? Do the memories of the people he killed still weigh on him. And the shadows of his world may have followed him here? Reborn in a foreign land, he must decide: Is he a monster shaped by war, or a man with a chance to rewrite his fate?

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Bad Start?

I stand outside the poorly built hut and slowly take in the war-torn country in front of me. The smell of death and the sight of burnt bodies alone would be enough to make someone want to just lie down and hope they wake up from a nightmare. What is even scarier is that me and a few others are the reason for this war. Now I do not mean that in a literal sense. Our government, which likes to remain at the top of the world and strike fear into everyone, sent us to this country as spies. Since my group has a bunch of special powers, we were able to blend in quite nicely and even managed to infiltrate their military. But what we did not expect was how much hatred they had for us and our country.

When I tell you the horrors I heard that they wanted to do to our wives, you could even understand wanting to completely destroy a country to the brink of ruin so they could not even rebuild the army they once had. It makes you sick when you really think about how fake they were. I mean, who says they would kill a child just for standing in their way? I do not know if it is because I was raised right or what, but I would never raise my hand to a kid. They are the ones who will lead the future. We just have to be the ones to ensure that the future happens.

I take my black glove off and start making a magic circle to encase the military base that is in front of me. With my magic I am able to see how many people are inside, and it seems like we have fifty inside, mostly foot soldiers who are probably even more confused than we are. I throw my hood over my head and cover my face with a mask that I picked up from an enemy I have slain. I slowly start to make my way inside the base as I feel a gun get pressed to my back.

"What do we have here?"

I stay silent, hoping he would realize I am one of them.

"Look here, boy, I am not afraid to shoot you dead here and now. You better start explaining yourself."

I turned around and managed to grab the gun from him. Thankfully he did not see my hand movements, but I was able to cast another spell I have learned that lets me rot anything I touch. I look at the guy as he is scared that his gun has fallen apart. I pushed him to the floor and grabbed the knife that is a part of my uniform, and I sat on the guy's chest. I drew the knife to the guy's neck.

"How many wasted pebbles are inside that building? I will air them all out if it means my country gets to live another day."

The older guy was trying to fight back. If I had to guess, he was most likely the general of the building, which meant if there was one, there would be more, sadly. He kept trying to push the knife back, so I got fed up and drove the knife into one of his hands as I covered his mouth so people could not hear him scream. I looked around to make sure my team was still behind me.

I had been sent with three other people. I know, a four-person squad taking out a whole country. What kind of monsters were we? Well, blame the Magic Ministry of Defense. They groom magic users into becoming top guys, and most, if not all, countries have them. Sadly, this is not what our power is supposed to be used for. We were supposed to unite with countries and take out other otherworldly things. Ever since people awakened to this power, dungeons or portals that lead to dungeons started opening up all around the world. Usually countries send their best men, but we are right now trying to stop a full-blown nuclear catastrophe from happening.

I do not know why the country Fria thought they could fight us. When I tell you they are poor and basically in the middle of nowhere, it is crazy how they even got a nuke. Thankfully it is underground, so if we raze the place with fireballs we do not have to worry about accidentally ending numerous lives.

I bring the old general up to his feet and make him serve as our foot soldier to lead us to the nuke. Thankfully he knows other routes with fewer enemies, so less killing, which is a good thing for me. We start walking along a route that had a bunch of dead bodies. One of my men from the group spoke up.

"Christ, look what they did to that girl. She was burnt alive and then cut open so they could take her magic crystal forcefully."

I look at the sight and almost feel sick to my stomach, but I cannot get sick. The moment I show a slight weakness my own men will falter, and this old man might try something. I put the blade to the guy's back.

"You did this to that poor girl? If so, give me a reason why I should not put you down like a rabid dog myself."

The old man looked at the body and sighed. "It was not me. It was another general."

"Oh, so there is more than one of you at this base. I am shocked, but then again not in the slightest. So tell me, old man, who was the general?"

The old man laughed quietly. "I am not going to rat on my own people so you can kill them or hold them up in a court of law."

That laugh ticked me off, so I kicked him in the back of the leg, leaving him on the floor. I stood over him with my knife drawn and stabbed him in the heart. I looted his body and found a keycard and a map. My men think less of me right now, but I do not care. I cannot stand people like that.

"Okay, men, looking at this map, we are going to have to head inside a tunnel, and then we should be able to find an elevator that brings us right to a nuke silo."

We slowly approach a mineshaft door, and I slowly open the door to peek inside to make sure this is the right spot.

"Okay, everyone, I see the tunnel. Let us head inside."

As we walk down the tunnel, you can hear footsteps above us and people whispering.

"Wonder what they are saying, boss."

I look over at Kai. "Probably more propaganda about how our country is terrible and how theirs is better."

Kai laughed at the mimic expression I did of the Fria soldiers.

As we keep walking, we approach a table with some chairs. We all sit down at it and look around the dimly lit mineshaft tunnel.

"I cannot wait until we finish this mission and get back to our regular jobs as people who just clear dungeons."

As we all stood up again, we heard an alarm go off. We did not think anything of it because we did not let them know we were here and no one made any obvious mistakes. Well, maybe me killing a guy and leaving his body to be a show, but it was more or less a warning.

As we started speed walking, we approached the elevator. I swiped the keycard and called the elevator. As we waited, we heard more people screaming above us. This time you could hear what they were saying.

"They set the nuke off to explode underground."

That was the one thing me and my men were able to make out. I look around as it starts to get hot all of a sudden. The elevator opens its doors, and we all step in. I pressed the button to the bottom floor, and the elevator was a lot quicker going down than up. As the door opened, we saw at last the nuke, which was powered on, and we did not know what to do.

We started trying to turn it off and rerun its coordinates, but nothing was working. Everything was overridden time and time again. I looked at my men and sat down next to the nuke.

"There is nothing we can do. They got us good."

All I saw after was a bright light come crashing down and surround me. I can say for once I was not scared of dying. In fact, I welcomed it. That light covered me all around and then, after a good five to ten minutes, I was awakened to a girl shaking me.
