Chapter 90 - Chapter 90: Hospital Vigil

ELENA'S POINT OF VIEW

The ambulance doors flew open and suddenly there were hands everywhere, voices shouting medical terms I didn't understand, bright lights that hurt my eyes. They pulled Alex's stretcher out first, and I tried to follow, but my legs weren't working right.

"Ma'am, you need to be checked too." A paramedic caught my arm as I stumbled.

"I'm fine. I need to stay with my husband."

"Elena." Alex's voice cut through the chaos. He was being wheeled away, but he turned his head and found my eyes. "Let them check you. Please. For the baby."

"But..."

"I'll be fine. It's just my leg. Go. Make sure our baby is okay."

The paramedic squeezed my arm gently. "We'll take good care of him. I promise."

Then he was gone, disappearing through automatic doors, and I was being guided in a different direction. My throat closed up. Everything that had happened tonight came crashing down at once and I couldn't breathe.

"Easy. Just breathe. You're safe now."
