Chapter 7 - Escaping

Fiona's Pov

I was alone again, walking on the street like the day I ran away from home. It was really cold so I went to a nearby coffee stand and ordered some hot cocoa.

I hadn't eaten but I couldn't spend all the money I had left from my shift, now that I had no shelter or who to cater for me. I stayed in the seat provided for customers until it was really dark, I had to do something. I dipped my hand into my coat to bring out money to pay for the coffee but I suddenly felt something solid. I brought it out and realised it was the same card that man had given me, I quickly paid for the coffee and located a nearby phone booth, put in 2cents and quickly dialed the number on the card. It rang for some time before someone picked.

"Hi, Welcome to the Kents group of companies, how may I help you"? A ladies voice spoke.

"Ummmm. I thought this was a private number, he gave me his card" I replied nervously.

"Mr Nathan"? She asked.

I couldn't reply because I didn't even know his name.

"Hold on" She said putting me on hold

I was quite anxious because I didn't have much and my call may get disconnected.

Just when her voice came through the line got disconnected. I wasn't sure if I should put in another coin because what if I don't get through to him? But as fate may have it, the phone rang, I picked immediately and a voice came through.

"Hi Fiona" I recognised the voice immediately. "I was expecting your call earlier but either way...you called ".

"How do you know It's me"? I asked.

"Where are you? I'll come pick you up"? He asked instead.

"Ummmm... I'm at a phone booth In West Street".

"Stay right there, I'm coming to pick you up" He said and hung up.

I stood inside the phone booth pretending to still make calls so I could stay inside longer, outside was freezing.

Narrator's Pov

"Where's she"? Fiona's father demanded.

"I'm sorry, she ran off immediately I told her I called you". Mason's grandma said.

"She ran? Why would she run"? Mr Duncan questioned.

"It seems she doesn't want you to find her".

"Where are her things"? He asked.

" Upstairs, she didn't take anything". Mason's grandma replied.

"How long has she been gone? And did you give her money "? Mr Duncan asked.

"3 hours, and I don't give her money but she works part time " she answered.

"My daughter works?? She's only 19, what sort of work could she possibly do"? Mr Duncan questioned.

"She works down the street as a server, but it's hourly. I told her not to but she insisted" Mason's grandma explained.

"I have to look for her, I'll be back" He said and immediately ran out.

Mason just kept a straight face.

"And you, where were you? If you were around she wouldn't have been able to run". She scolded.

"Now it's my fault? I was against her staying grandma, but you insisted and she took your kindness for a fool".

I was still waiting in the phone booth when I heard someone screaming my name, I recognised it as my fathers, no way!! He can't find me.

"Fiona"!!! His voice kept echoing. I kept mute and silently prayed he didn't find me.

The voice slowly faded but I kept still, just then the phone booth door opened and my heart skipped. Luckily it was who I was waiting for.

"Common let's go, It's freezing out there". He took his coat off and wrapped it around me.

"Where's are your bags"? He asked.

"I left them" I slowly responded shiving.

"Okay... Get into the car". He opened the door for me as I entered and he closed it, got into the car and drove off.
