Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

The skyline, a jagged silhouette against the vibrant sky, felt like a world away from the intimate setting of the rooftop garden at Sterling Enterprises. Ivy had always loved this place—the lush greenery, the twinkling fairy lights, and the breathtaking view of the city that never slept. But tonight, the beauty felt overshadowed by the weight of uncertainty.

She stood at the edge of the terrace, her fingers tracing the cool metal railing as she watched the sun sink lower. The soft hum of laughter and clinking glasses floated around her, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside. The annual charity gala was in full swing, and the room was filled with the city's elite, all dressed to the nines. But Ivy felt out of place, her heart heavy with the secrets she had been keeping.

"Hey, you okay?" A familiar voice broke through her thoughts. She turned to see Ethan Sterling, the billionaire who had captured her heart, approaching her with that disarming smile that made her stomach flutter. He looked dashing in a tailored navy suit, his dark hair perfectly tousled. But tonight, his eyes held a hint of concern that made her pulse quicken.

"Just taking a moment to breathe," she replied, forcing a smile. "It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?"

Ethan stepped closer, his gaze searching hers. "You don't have to pretend with me, Ivy. If something's bothering you, I want to know."

She hesitated, the weight of her secret pressing down on her. For months, she had been living in a whirlwind romance with Ethan, a man whose world was filled with luxury and privilege. But beneath the glitz and glamour, she had been hiding a part of her life—her financial struggles, her mounting student loans, and the fear that their worlds were too different to ever truly merge.

"I'm just… thinking about everything," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "About us."

Ethan's expression shifted, a flicker of concern crossing his features. "What do you mean?"

"I love you, Ethan," she confessed, the words spilling out before she could stop them. "But I can't shake the feeling that I'm not enough for you. Your world is so different from mine, and I'm scared that one day you'll realize that."

He reached for her hand, his touch warm and grounding. "Ivy, you are more than enough for me. I don't care about your past or your financial situation. What matters is how you make me feel. You bring light into my life in a way I never thought possible."

Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, and she blinked them away. "But what if I can't keep up? What if I drag you down?"

Ethan stepped closer, his voice low and earnest. "You won't. I promise you that. I want to build a life with you, not just a relationship. I want to share everything—my successes, my failures, my dreams. But I need you to trust me."

The sincerity in his eyes made her heart ache. She wanted to believe him, to let go of her fears and embrace the love they shared. But the nagging doubt lingered, a shadow that refused to dissipate.

"I just don't want to be a burden," she admitted, her voice trembling.

"You could never be a burden to me," he said firmly. "You're my partner, Ivy. We're in this together. But you have to let me in. You have to share your fears with me, not hide them."

She took a deep breath, the weight of his words settling over her like a warm blanket. "Okay," she said softly. "I'll try."

Ethan smiled, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "That's all I ask. Now, how about we go back inside? I think they're about to announce the auction items, and I could use your support."

Ivy nodded, feeling a flicker of excitement amidst her anxiety. As they walked back into the gala, hand in hand, she felt a sense of resolve building within her. Maybe it was time to stop hiding and start embracing the life they could build together.

But as they stepped into the bustling room, Ivy's heart sank. Across the crowd, she spotted a familiar figure—her estranged father, the man who had walked out of her life years ago. He stood there, a glass of champagne in hand, his presence a stark reminder of the past she had tried so hard to escape.

Ethan noticed her sudden stillness and followed her gaze. "Ivy?" he asked, concern etched on his face.

"I need to go," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't do this right now."

Before he could respond, she turned and slipped away, her heart racing. She needed to confront the ghosts of her past, to face the man who had left her with scars that still ached. But as she navigated through the crowd, she couldn't shake the feeling that this confrontation could change everything.

And as she stepped outside into the cool night air, she knew that the path ahead was uncertain. But for the first time, she felt a flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, she could find the strength to face it all—her past, her fears, and the love that had the power to heal her heart.
