Chapter 40 - To Build a Foundation

Scene 1

The Lin Clan's main hall had not felt this quiet in years.

Several elders sat in quiet discussion, their tones low and thoughtful. Days of internal uproar had worn lines into their faces, yet now… now there was a strange lightness, as though someone had pried away the invisible pressure that had suffocated them for years.

The Great Elder's uproar, his defeat, his furious departure—

It had shaken the clan to its core.

But it had also freed them.

The First Elder stood at the head of the hall, hands clasped behind his back, gaze firm.

> "The council's decision is final. Patriarch Lin Yuan's coronation will be held in seven days. Everyone must prepare without delay."

An elder with streaks of gray in his hair nodded deeply.

> "We must restore our reputation. The Zhao Clan has slandered us for too long. The ceremony should be grand enough that the entire city witnesses our rebirth."

Another elder, cautious and sharp-eyed, stepped forward.

> "However… the Great Elder's faction has gone silent. Silence from those old snakes is never a good sign."

The First Elder's expression darkened for a moment, a cold glint sliding through his eyes.

> "Let them hide for now. Once the new Patriarch ascends, their tunneling holes will be sealed shut."

His gaze shifted toward Lin Yuan, who stood quietly beside him.

Lin Yuan looked healthier than before, though the remnants of years of humiliation still lingered in the faint droop of his posture. When the First Elder addressed him, respect colored every word.

> "Patriarch Lin Yuan, your son… he has brought great honor to your house. He has far exceeded all our expectations."

Lin Yuan smiled, but worry furrowed his brows.

> "Xian'er… he's grown too quickly. His mind is far too great for someone his age. Sometimes, when I look at him, I feel as though I'm staring at someone who has lived twice."

The First Elder nodded slowly, voice heavy.

> "Great power never comes without great responsibility. Whatever burden he carries… it is one he does not share lightly."

Around them, servants hurried across the hall, carrying lanterns, polishing banners, reviewing invitation scrolls. The air buzzed with preparation—anticipation and hope.

For the first time in many years, the Lin Clan was preparing for a celebration.

Yet amidst the activity, amidst the rising sense of rebirth…

The one who started it all had vanished into silence.

Scene 2 – A Cunning Mind in Solitude

Far from the bustling preparations, in a quiet corner of the Lin estate, Lin Xian sat alone on the balcony of his courtyard. Moonlight cascaded across the stone floor, turning the world silver.

A teapot steamed beside him, filling the air with a faint herbal fragrance that contains rare spirit herbs and gentle calm.

Xiao Jin lay sprawled across his shoulder like a lazy scarf, purring contentedly while swishing his tail back and forth.

Lin Xian held a cup of tea, but his attention lay far beyond the courtyard walls. His eyes—deep, steady, contemplative—reflected the night sky like a calm lake.

> "The pill war is nearly at its end," he murmured. "Zhao Clan's position is collapsing. The market bends under Nine Tails' influence…"

He paused, swirling the tea gently.

> "…but this is not the end."

A subtle shift passed through his expression.

A cold glimmer.

Predicting a storm that is coming.

> "The Great Elder will not accept humiliation quietly. And Zhao Clan…"

His voice dropped, like a whisper

> "…once they connect Nine Tails Apothecary to me, they'll strike with everything they have."

Xiao Jin nudged his cheek with a soft meow, as if trying to soothe him.

Lin Xian chuckled.

> "You understand, little one? That is why the next step… isn't just business."

He set down the cup.

> "It's strength."

His gaze rose toward the moon, glowing bright above the clouds.

> "Influence only works when your fists are bigger and stronger. What use is wealth and strategy if someone stronger can wipe them away in one breath?"

Xiao Jin let out a proud mrrp, puffing his tiny chest.

Lin Xian reached over, gently rubbing the kitten's head.

> "That's why we can't rest yet. The markets, the clans, the apothecary—they all rely on one thing."

His voice hardened with resolve.

> "My power."

A wind swept through the bamboo forest as if the world itself responded to his vow.

Scene 3 – The Path to Perfection

The cultivation chamber lay in absolute silence, lit only by glowing formation lines etched into the stone.

Lin Xian sat cross-legged at the center, his white hair trailing behind him like river silk. Silver light from the formation wrapped around him, pulsing gently with each breath he took.

His Qi flowed like a river—the nine meridians resonating so harmoniously that the air trembled faintly.

After a long period of meditation, Lin Xian opened his eyes. A serene glow shimmered beneath them.

> "My foundation is complete."

His voice echoed softly in the room.

> "But this level… it won't be enough to survive what's coming."

He slowly raised his palm.

A crystalline illusion shimmered above his skin—a fragmentary image of a radiant gem.

> "The Soul Stone."

A treasure so rare even major clans would kill for it.

Unlike normal breakthrough methods—which relied solely on spiritual Qi—

The Soul Stone merged the cultivator's Qi with their soul essence, allowing them to create an unbreakable, flawless foundation.

Lin Xian's eyes deepened, shadows of an ancient will flickering behind them.

> "Others form foundations to walk the path."

"I must form one to reclaim what I once commanded."

The mist-like aura swirling around him intensified, curling around his body like gentle serpents of light.

> "If I am to return to my former peak… my rebirth must begin with perfection."

Xiao Jin hopped lightly onto his shoulder, tail curling around his neck. The kitten yawned, then rubbed its head against his cheek—an unspoken support.

Lin Xian chuckled softly.

> "Come, Xiao Jin."

He rose to his feet, aura rippling outward like the calm tide before a tsunami.

> "Tomorrow, we hunt for the Soul Stone."

The kitten's golden eyes glowed mischievously, as though thrilled by the promise of danger and adventure.

Outside, the bamboo rustled gently.

The night was peaceful.

But that peace was only an illusion—

one breath away from shattering.

For in the depths of Azurecloud City…

forces were already mobilizing.
