Chapter 17 - chapter 17 Mugen Train Arc end

Screen 1 – Akaza Retreats / Rengoku's Final Moments (Dark & Bloody Version)

The forest still trembles from the final clash.

Ash rains down like snow.

Smoke curls around broken steel and splintered trees.

Blood—human and demon—soaks the earth in muddy red patterns.

Rengoku stands locked with Akaza, blade snapped, ribs shattered, a gaping hole torn through his abdomen.

His blood pours onto the forest floor, pooling beneath his feet.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke sprint toward him.

"RENGOKU!!"

But Akaza's senses sharpen instantly.

He doesn't even turn his head—

He flicks his hand.

A shockwave of compressed air explodes outward.

BOOM.

The blast crushes the ground and hurls all three boys violently.

Zenitsu smashes into a tree; bark splits, blood sprays.

Inosuke tumbles, his boar mask cracking.

Tanjiro hits the dirt, coughing blood.

Akaza steps forward to finish him, fingers poised like blades.

"Stay down, boy."

He moves in for the kill—

But the air flashes blue.

A gravity shockwave bends the soil.

Sans appears between them, eye blazing with a deadly flame.

His aura twists the air like a storm.

"Back. Off."

The blue force detonates.

Akaza is pushed several meters backward—

the ground ripping beneath his feet.

Akaza finally looks surprised.

"A skeleton… with power this dense?

Your soul burns stronger than I expected."

Sans doesn't blink.

"Try me and see what happens when I'm not holding back."

Papyrus runs beside him, shaking, voice cracking.

"SANS!! D-DON'T FIGHT HIM! YOU'LL DIE! THIS ISN'T LIKE ENMU!"

Sans doesn't look away.

"Chill, bro.

I'm not trying to beat him."

His blue flame intensifies.

"I'm just buying time until he runs."

Akaza glances at the horizon.

The first speck of sunlight bleeds over the mountain.

His smile fades.

"Tch… daybreak."

He looks back at Rengoku—who still stands, dying but unbroken.

"You truly are a warrior.

I hope you survive… so we can fight again."

Papyrus shouts, voice shaking with anger:

"YOU COWARD! HIDING FROM THE SUN!"

Akaza smirks.

"Nature kills demons.

Not cowards."

Sans steps forward—

his shadow warping, stretching, bending reality.

Akaza senses it.

"Another time, skeleton."

With explosive force—

he launches into the trees, shredding branches, vanishing into the dark forest.

The battlefield finally falls silent…

…except for the sound of Rengoku's blood dripping onto the soil.

---

Rengoku's Final Moments (Darker Version)

Rengoku drops to one knee.

His blood drenches the ground.

Steam rises from his body as his flame aura flickers out—

like a torch dying in the wind.

Tanjiro crawls to him, tears mixing with dirt and blood.

"Rengoku… please, don't move…!"

Rengoku smiles softly, though his lips are stained red.

"No need… Tanjiro.

My body is already… leaving me."

Papyrus kneels beside him.

His voice cracks horribly.

"RENGOKU… YOU WERE AMAZING… YOU FOUGHT UNTIL THE END…"

Rengoku coughs blood, but chuckles weakly.

"You two skeletons…

such strange allies…

yet you fight with heart."

Sans stands silently behind them—

but for once, the smile is gone.

His eye dim.

His hands trembling.

"…you didn't deserve this."

Rengoku looks at Sans, smiling gently as his vision dims.

"I protected them.

That's enough."

His flame burns weakly—

embers falling from his body like glowing tears.

Tanjiro grips his hand.

"Rengoku… don't go…"

Rengoku's eyes soften.

"Tanjiro…

your sister… Nezuko…

is beautiful… like the morning sun."

More blood drips from his wounds.

The sunlight reaches him—

and his body begins to weaken further.

He whispers:

"Set… your hearts… ablaze…"

His voice fades.

His body slumps.

The flame inside him finally dies.

Papyrus breaks.

His voice cracks.

"R-RENGOKU… NO… WE NEEDED YOU…"

Sans lowers his head.

"…rest easy, flame guy."

The sun rises.

And a hero falls.

Screen 2 – End of the Mugen Train Arc (Dark & Bloody Version)

The sun climbs higher, bathing the battlefield in gold—

but nothing feels warm.

Blood stains the ruined earth.

The cracked metal of the Mugen Train lies twisted like a corpse.

Tanjiro wipes tears with a shaking hand.

"Rengoku…

We'll keep moving forward.

We'll carry your flame."

Zenitsu falls to his knees, sobbing openly.

"He was… he was too good for this world!

Why do demons… always take people who shine!?"

Inosuke tries to roar— but his voice collapses into painful, broken sobs.

"H-he was strong…

He was so strong…

Why… did he have to die…!?"

Papyrus places a hand on Inosuke's shoulder, voice soft and cracked.

"It's okay to cry…

This battlefield deserves tears."

Sans walks away from the group.

Staring at the trees Akaza escaped through.

"Upper Rank…

We're not ready.

Not yet."

For once, he sounds angry.

Really angry.

Nezuko appears beside Tanjiro, touching his arm gently—

her eyes full of sadness and understanding.

The messenger crow lands on a broken post, voice quieter than usual.

"MUGEN TRAIN MISSION COMPLETE.

RENGOKU KYOJURO…

FALLEN IN BATTLE.

HONOR HIS NAME."

Even the crow sounds heartbroken.

---

The Group Rebuilds Themselves

Tanjiro wraps his broken sword.

Zenitsu helps carry bleeding survivors.

Nezuko shields crying children.

Inosuke sits silently, mask lowered, tears dripping unnoticed.

Papyrus and Sans gather the wounded, moving with serious focus.

Papyrus whispers:

"Sans… do you think Rengoku is still watching us?"

Sans nods faintly.

"Yeah.

And he's still telling us to stand."

Papyrus forces a weak smile.

"'Umai'… right?"

Sans snorts softly.

"Yeah… 'umai.'"

Tanjiro bows toward the blood-stained ground where Rengoku died.

"We'll keep your flame alive.

We swear it."

The forest wind blows gently—

as if carrying Rengoku's warmth one last time.

---

Leaving the Wreckage Behind

They walk away from the ruins of the Mugen Train.

Not victorious.

But alive.

Zenitsu sniffles, voice hoarse.

"C-can we rest now…?"

Inosuke wipes his face harshly.

"NO…! WE TRAIN…

WE GET STRONGER…

SO WE NEVER LOSE LIKE THIS AGAIN!"

Papyrus lifts a fist.

"FOR RENGOKU!"

Sans cracks his knuckles.

"…yeah.

We're gonna need power.

A lot more."

Tanjiro steps forward.

"This arc ends here…

…but our battle has just begun."

The sun burns over the forest—

the last light of Rengoku's flame living on in all of them.
