Chapter Sixty – The Chief's visit
Natalie knew something was wrong and she didn't need to be told, that she had to do something drastic about the changes
She felt it in the way the house went quiet. Not the normal quiet that came after the twins slept or Zahid left for work. This one was sharper. Like the air itself was holding its breath.
She stood by the window in the sitting room, fingers resting lightly on the curtain. Outside, the compound was calm, but her chest felt tight.
Angel and the twins had gone upstairs earlier. Zahid was in his study. Hakeem had just arrived and spoken to one of the guards in a low voice.
Natalie watched it all.
She had learned to notice things like that.
For days, she had been the one holding this place together. Making schedules. Managing staff. Making sure the twins ate, slept, laughed. Making sure Zahid's life ran smoothly while his heart was somewhere else.
And now Angel was back.
Natalie pressed her lips together.
