Chapter 40 - 40. Up The Stairs

Aunt Marie appeared again, now wearing a dark blue leggings that clung to her thick thighs and round ass like a second skin. The material was thin and stretchy, outlining every curve, the seam running right between her cheeks and highlighting the full shape of her hips. She had on a loose white blouse, but even that couldn't hide her massive tits.

Its top buttons undone just enough to show deep cleavage, the fabric stretching across her chest with every breath. She still looked a little embarrassed, cheeks pink, eyes avoiding mine as she walked into the room.

She stopped a few feet away, hands clasped in front of her, fingers twisting nervously.

"Sorry, Alex... please don't mind Mike..." Aunt Marie's voice came out soft and shaky as she stood there, hands fidgeting in front of her.

I stood up from the sofa the moment I heard her apologizing. My heart was still pounding from seeing her with Mike, in Rose's clothes, acting like she belonged to him. The guilt twisted harder in my chest, sharp and heavy.

"It's just... how he is." Her eyes darted around the room anywhere but mine. She twisted her fingers together nervously, knuckles turning white, like she didn't know what to do with her hands. Her cheeks were still flushed, a soft pink that spread down her neck, making her look even more vulnerable.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out at first. Watching her apologize like this made the guilt burn deeper. It was my fault. If I hadn't fought Mike that day, if I'd just paid for the damn drink, none of this would have happened. Aunt Marie wouldn't be trapped with him. Rose wouldn't be in danger. Everything felt like it was crumbling because of me.

"Aunt Marie... you don't have to apologize." I finally managed, voice low and rough.

"Only if that day I didn—"

"Let's... not talk about this..." she interrupted quickly, almost desperately. Her eyes finally met mine for a second, wide and glistening, before dropping again.

She took a small step back, arms wrapping around herself. Her breasts pressed up against her arms, the loose white blouse shifting slightly, the top buttons straining just enough to show more of her deep cleavage. The fabric was thin, clinging to her curves from the earlier sweat, outlining the full shape of her chest with every quick breath she took.

"Um... okay." I understood why she wouldn't want to talk about it. The guilt in her eyes was too heavy, and pushing would only make things worse. I just nodded to her quietly and turned toward Rose's room. She was the main reason I'd come here, after all.

"Alex!" Aunt Marie called from behind, her voice a little higher than usual.

"Yeah?" I paused mid-step and looked back.

"Are you... here for Rose...?" she asked, the question coming out strange and hesitant. It felt off, like she already knew the answer but still needed to hear it. Her fingers twisted together in front of her again, eyes flicking from my face to the floor and back.

"Yeah." I said slowly, ignoring the weird feeling crawling up my spine.

"I wanted to meet her. Can I go up?" She didn't answer right away. Her lips parted, then closed again, like she was searching for the right words but couldn't find them.

This time my eyes drifted to the chocolate box still sitting on the coffee table, the one I'd brought for Rose. I'd almost walked away without it. I stepped back quickly, picked it up, and held it tight against my chest like it was some kind of shield.

I turned again and started toward the stairs leading to Rose's room.

"Alex, wait." Aunt Marie called once more, her voice sharper this time, almost urgent.

Now it was suspicious, her behavior wasn't usual at all. It felt weird for her to call me back again and again like that, stalling me with small talk and nervous glances. She kept finding reasons to keep me downstairs, to keep me from going up.

'She is trying to stop me from going to Rose's room.'

The thought hit me hard. My heartbeat sped up. Did something happen with Rose? Was that why Aunt Marie looked so guilty, so desperate to keep me here? The questions flooded in fast, each one worse than the last.

That had to be it. She wasn't just embarrassed, she was scared. Trying to keep me from seeing whatever was up there.

But I couldn't stay down here. I had to see Rose now, no matter what.

"Yes, these are for Rose," I said quickly, lifting the chocolate box a little higher. "Well then, I should go to her room now."

I started toward the stairs before she could respond. Aunt Marie opened her mouth like she wanted to say something but nothing came out this time. Her lips moved silently for a second, then closed. She couldn't think of a new lie fast enough.

I ignored her and kept walking. My footsteps felt heavy on the stairs. The chocolate box was already slightly crushed from earlier—when I'd gripped it too hard facing Mike. Now I held it against my chest like a shield, fingers digging into the cardboard.

As I climbed higher, my heart squeezed tighter with every step. Dangerous thoughts kept pushing in. The possibilities spun in my head, each one darker than the last.

I reached the top of the stairs, breath shallow, hand trembling as I reached for Rose's door.
