Chapter 62 - Chapter 63: Blood Doesn’t Always Mean Home

~Becklan's POV~

I picked it up, and my heart skipped violently. The screen wasn't showing a business contact or a friend. It was a photo of a woman, a face I hadn't seen in far too long.

"Who is it?" Leon asked, noticing the way I had gone still.

I swallowed hard and showed him the screen. "It's my mom."

"Your mom?" Leon repeated, his brow furrowing. He knew enough of my history to know that her name was a ghost in this house.

"Yes," I murmured, my fingers tightening around the phone. I looked at Leon, searching his eyes for some sense in it. "Why is she calling? Leon, ever since I left that house, she's never called me. Not once. Not to ask if I was eating or if I even had a place to sleep. Why now?"

Leon's expression softened. "Babe," he said gently, "the only way you'll get your answer is if you pick it up."

"No." I shook my head, my heart pounding with fear and long-buried resentment. "I'm not answering it." I reached out and set the phone back on the nightstand.
