"Okay, baby," I murmured, letting his scent and warmth ground me. Finally, exhaustion took over. We stayed entwined, his steady heartbeat the last sound I felt before slipping into sleep.
The next morning, the sunlight felt a little less harsh than the day before. As we got dressed, the tension in my chest was still there, but Leon's advice from the night before stayed at the front of my mind: Be the calm one. Be the safe harbor.
Leon adjusted his cuffs before turning to me, his gaze sweeping over my outfit with quiet scrutiny. "We'll make a stop at the store before heading to the hospital," he said, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
"The store?" I asked.
"We can't go see your mom empty-handed, Angel," he said with a gentle smile. "We'll pick up a few thoughtful things for her, something to brighten the room and make her more comfortable while she's there."
