Chapter 8 - Lines blurred

The next morning, Maya arrived at Cole Towers with a quiet resolve. Yesterday's words — close enough to burn — still echoed in her mind. She didn't fully understand them, but they had left a mark she couldn't ignore. Every step toward Adrian's office felt heavier, charged with anticipation she didn't want to admit.

She knocked softly. "Good morning," she said.

Adrian didn't reply immediately. He was at his desk, tapping a pen against a thick ledger, eyes sharp behind the corner of his glasses. His expression was unreadable, distant. Maya wondered if she had imagined the intensity yesterday.

"Sit," he said finally, without looking up.

Maya perched on the edge of the chair, hands clasped tightly in her lap. She had barely started her notes when he spoke again.

"You made a mistake in the report."

Her heart dropped. "I… I don't think so. I double-checked everything."

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The calm precision of his tone was sharper than any shout. "You misinterpreted one of the clauses. The numbers are technically correct, but your assumption changes the projection. That's dangerous."

Maya's stomach tightened. She had been meticulous. "I didn't mean to—"

"Intentions don't matter here," he interrupted softly, leaning back. "Results do."

She bit her lip. She hated being wrong. She hated failing in front of him. And yet… there was something in his words that didn't feel like mere reprimand. It was… a challenge.

"I'll fix it," she said firmly, even as her hands trembled slightly.

He tilted his head. "Good. But consider this—don't just correct numbers. Anticipate consequences. Understand the people behind them."

Maya frowned. "The people?"

"Yes. Everything in business comes from people. Their fears, ambitions, and secrets. Numbers are just the surface. You have to dig deeper." His eyes met hers briefly, sharp and unreadable. "Do you understand?"

She nodded, though the weight of his words pressed against her chest. Dig deeper… understand the people.

The rest of the morning passed in tense silence. Maya worked feverishly, but the lingering feeling of being watched, measured, analyzed, made it difficult to focus completely. Every glance from Adrian seemed to carry multiple layers: observation, critique, and something… personal.

Then, during a brief moment when Adrian was on a call, Maya's phone buzzed with a message from Tasha:

"Be careful. Don't get too close. He's… complicated."

Maya blinked, startled. She slipped her phone into her bag, heart racing. Too close… what does that even mean?

By lunch, the tension had escalated. Adrian returned to his desk, finished with the call, and glanced at her with a faint smirk. "Your work is improving."

Maya exhaled, a flicker of relief passing through her. "Thank you."

He leaned slightly forward, eyes narrowing. "But don't think that makes you untouchable. You're still learning. And in this environment…" He paused, letting the words linger. "…mistakes have consequences."

Maya's cheeks burned. She didn't know whether to be proud or terrified. The subtle energy between them was confusing, intoxicating, and frightening all at once.

And then, just as she turned to leave for a short break, Adrian added, his voice low but deliberate:

"You're closer than most to understanding me, Maya. Don't mistake proximity for safety."

Her pulse quickened. Her mind raced. She wanted to ask what he meant, wanted clarity, but the moment had passed. He had returned to his work, leaving her with a whirlwind of questions and emotions she couldn't name.

Walking to the elevator, Maya realized the truth: working for Adrian Cole wasn't just about surviving deadlines or impressing a boss. It was about navigating a storm — a storm that was unpredictable, consuming, and terrifyingly magnetic.

And despite every warning, every instinct, Maya knew she couldn't stay away.
