Chapter 4 - Eyes Watching

Mei Ling woke up with a soft yawn. Her muscles ached, and her heart still raced from the events of the previous night.

The apartment was quiet that morning.

She could hear traffic in the distance and a bird singing outside. The faint smell of rain drifted through the room. The city was already beginning to stir.

She stretched and took a deep breath.

Her body shuddered as she remembered the fear of seeing the men in black up close.

Mei Ling glanced at the clock and saw that it was 6 a.m. A surge of worry hit her. She had little time. Work started at 8:30 a.m., so every minute counted

The stranger appeared quietly, wearing a nose mask as though he had been waiting for her. Mei Ling assumed he didn't want to be seen in daylight, so she didn't question it.

He said nothing and offered no explanation for bringing her there. His calm presence contrasted sharply with the chaos she had endured the previous night.

He gestured for her to follow him. Mei Ling hesitated, doubt crossing her mind. Her need to survive outweighed her doubts, so she followed him.

As they walked, Mei Ling watched him closely. There was something about him she couldn't understand, and she wanted to know more.

They reached the place where she had first seen him. The street corner looked different in daylight. The shadows that had seemed threatening the previous night now appeared harmless.

But Mei Ling knew better. Danger could be anywhere.

She studied the alley walls, the stained paint, the faded graffiti, and a stray cat scratching at a trash bin.

He turned toward her and motioned for her to leave.

"Go on. You don't need me to escort you any further," he said quietly.

Mei Ling realized she wouldn't learn his name. There would be no way to contact him.

She felt relieved, but frustrated at the same time. She had survived the night, yet she knew almost nothing about the man who had saved her.

To make matters worse, she had barely seen his face the previous night, and now he was wearing a nose mask.

She made a silent promise to herself. She would look into him. As a crime journalist, no detail went unchecked. She would find him.

The walk home was quiet. Mei Ling thought about everything she had done to survive, hiding behind trash bins, staying close to walls, and moving quietly. Even in daylight, the fear lingered.

Shops were beginning to open, while taxis and buses moved steadily through the streets.

By the time she reached her apartment, the city was fully awake. People rushed to catch buses, shops opened, vendors called out to passing customers, and the smell of fresh bread from a nearby bakery filled the air.

Mei Ling barely noticed any of it.

Back at her apartment, Mei Ling let out a slow breath. She took a quick shower, allowing the warm water to ease her aching muscles. Her breakfast was simple, just coffee and toast.

By 8:15 a.m., she was out the door and walking quickly toward the office. The sidewalks were busier now, with cab drivers honking loudly to attract passengers. Mei Ling watched everyone she passed, noting who seemed ordinary and who seemed out of place.

She reached The Sentinel Press building at 8:20 a.m., just in time to settle in. She nodded to the security guard, exchanged a quick greeting with a colleague, and went to her desk.

She turned on her computer and reviewed her notes, going over files from her investigation into District 12's growing mafia activity.

Even as she worked, her thoughts returned to the stranger.

Why did he save me?

What does he want?

Is he connected to the men in black?

Mei Ling leaned back in her chair. She needed to know who he was without putting herself in danger.

The day went by really fast. Everyone was busy on their computers, taking calls, and writing reports.

At her desk, she stayed alert, noticing anything unusual.

As the workday ended and the office emptied around her, she carefully packed her things, and headed out, fully aware that the city could still be dangerous even at daytime.

A man across the street glanced in her direction, and her pulse quickened. Mei Ling looked away and continued walking, reminding herself not to let fear control her.

She stopped at a small café and bought a bottle of water and a snack. Before leaving, she paused to observe her surroundings.

A mother tried to calm her crying child. A young man argued on his phone, while a group of teenagers laughed as they passed.

Mei Ling noticed their gestures and expressions before continuing down the street.

When Mei Ling reached her apartment, she locked the door and exhaled sharply.

She set down her bag and kicked off her shoes.

A message appeared on her phone.

It was from a colleague, containing a tip about suspicious activity in District 12.

Mei Ling read it quickly while keeping an eye on the window.

She placed the phone down and returned to her notes.

Her plan for the next day was clear. She would check public records, review surveillance footage, confirm leads through her contacts, and investigate the stranger's identity

She couldn't afford mistakes.

She laid out her clothes for the next day and made sure everything was ready

By the time she finally sat at her desk, Mei Ling let out a slow breath.

"I'll find answers no matter the risk," she whispered.

Just then, her eyes shifted to the window.

She thought about the steps she would take the next day and the stranger who had appeared from the darkness to save her.

One thing was certain: she couldn't stop now. The story was alive, and so was she.

One thing was certain. She couldn't stop now.

Mei Ling was about to turn off her laptop when her phone vibrated again.

A new notification appeared.

One new photo.

She didn't recognize the number.

Her chest tightened as she opened the photo.

It was a photograph of her walking home earlier that evening.

It had been taken from behind.

It was close enough to show the strands of hair brushing against her collar. Whoever took it had been close.

A chill swept through her body.

She hadn't seen anyone.

A message appeared beneath the photo.

"You are not as careful as you think."
