A strange warmth bloomed in my chest, tinged with something bittersweet.

The walk-in closet stretched deep into the room, its walls lined with tiny compartments stuffed full of dolls - the kind little girls treasure. Most were vintage animated figurines from specific years, almost all collector's pieces.

An entire wall showcased toys spanning childhood to teenage years.

Julio positioned himself in front of me, gesturing toward a miniature racing car tucked in the corner. Pride radiated from his voice. "I won this at the city model car competition when I was young.

"Saved it just for you. Figured you'd be into racing when you finally came home."

His gaze found mine. "You like racing?"

I nodded. "Yeah, I do. Competed before."

Crouching down, I lifted the model from the floor, picturing that young boy clutching his prize, eyes blazing with triumph and joy.

My mention of racing sparked something in Julio. "When did you race? Which competition?"
