Morris's POV

When I arrived at the coffee shop, I spotted a "Closed" sign hanging on the door.

Strangely enough, the door wasn't locked.

I pushed it open.

Heavy curtains blocked out the light, casting the entire shop in shadows.

I noticed several people sprawled across the floor, unconscious and sporting fresh bruises on their faces.

My jaw clenched, and I spun toward the stairs.

The moment I reached the top floor, before I could step onto the rooftop, warm fingers wrapped around my wrist.

Danger flashed through me, and I tensed, ready to shake off whoever had grabbed me.

But when I looked over, Ana's delicate face filled my vision.

Seeing the cold, lethal expression in my eyes, Ana quickly raised her free hand and said, "Wait—it's me! Just me!"

I froze for a heartbeat, then pulled her against my chest.

I asked in a rough whisper near her ear, "Are you hurt?"

Ana must have heard the tremor in my voice.
