Garret froze, his eyes locked on me.
I pressed on, my voice steady. "She told me something once. Growing up, whenever your parents handed you treats, toys, or new clothes while ignoring her, you'd always find ways to split everything with her. During college, you even picked up part-time jobs just to slip her spending money."
"But here's what you never knew—after your parents discovered you were sharing with her, they'd corner her privately. Verbal abuse. Physical beatings. All because of your kindness."
"That's why she chose to end it all when they forced her to quit school. She felt trapped under your parents' thumb with no way out."
Garret remained motionless, absorbing every word I spoke.
"Those two people lying in hospital beds? They're your parents, sure. But to Gaile? They were never family," I added.
