Weeks had passed since I first knocked on Kelly's door, and somehow I was still here.
Every time I tried to tell them I needed to leave, that I was becoming too much of an imposition, both Kelly and Elana would shut me down with gentle but firm reassurance. They never asked questions about my situation, never pushed for details I wasn't ready to give. There was something in Kelly's knowing glances that first night that told me she understood I needed this sanctuary.
So I stayed, falling into their rhythm like I belonged there.
Our mornings became a cherished routine. Kelly would wage her daily battle to drag Elana from bed while the teenager fought back with creative excuses about why education was overrated and how she could become an influencer without algebra. Their banter filled the apartment with warmth that I'd forgotten could exist in a home.
