This definitely wasn't how I pictured my week ending.

When I signed those divorce papers, I thought I was closing the door on everything between us. Yet here I sat, those words from his letter playing on repeat in my mind like a broken record.

Fifty-two times.

That's exactly how many times I'd read every single word between yesterday evening and this morning, before Jefferson arrived to bring me back home. I knew him well enough to understand he wouldn't want to talk about what he'd written, but I couldn't stop thinking about it.

What could he have possibly done that was so awful it made him lock away his heart?

How brutal must his childhood have been, living under the fists of an abusive father?

Was Cathrine the little cousin he'd mentioned, and where had his mother been during all that suffering?
