One moment everything was normal. Jefferson walked beside me with his usual calm demeanor, though I'd noticed his murderous stare at the dumpling vendor earlier. The poor man had practically cowered under that look. When I'd bounced away with my food, practically glowing with happiness, Jefferson had caught up easily. I'd just taken my first bite when his hand clamped around my wrist.

His grip was firm but careful as he pulled me away from the carnival booths.

"Jefferson, what are you—"

The words died in my throat.

A gunshot cracked through the night air, sharp and unmistakable. For a split second, I wondered if it came from one of those carnival shooting games with their plastic rifles and stuffed animal prizes. But the sound was too real, too violent.

Then the screaming began.
