Introduction — the novel's ontology
This is an epic, experimental novel. By "experimental" I mean an attempt to renew familiar forms using shock, surreal strangeness, and sensations the reader may encounter for the first time. I will try to move beyond the recycled patterns found in many other novels.
This novel builds a vast, coherent, logically indexed world, with an explanation of a complex power system, additional taxonomies, and definitions....
In this experimental work I also aim to evoke the feeling of an infant waking for the first time and discovering strange, hard-to-understand things with a small curious mind — but presented with greater maturity. As Albert Einstein said: "The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible."
The harmony between the universe and our minds — between the cosmos and our logic and equations — is the greatest mystery. In this novel I will perform a kind of factory reset to reveal that other universes are not different because of different animals, or humans with long ears, or because they have "magic," or any of the archetypes J. R. R. Tolkien established. Other worlds differ in things far more fundamental than that.
