Holy shit—it really was an amphibian.

Albert had already had a suspicion the first time he saw them, but watching that swarm of baby-faced fish actually crawl ashore… that was a completely different experience.

It felt like living through a horror movie in person.

Albert immediately stopped bothering to hide anything in front of Hayes. He raised his hand and fired a glob of spider silk straight toward the cave entrance—

…only to realize he was running out of silk again.

The jet of liquid osteoprotein spread rapidly and evenly in midair, flattening out into a milky-white, semi-transparent fibrous membrane that sealed off the cave mouth they had only just climbed up through.

It was clearly thinner than what Albert remembered, though.

The baby-faced fish surged forward like miniature steel cannons, craning their ugly, grotesque heads and ramming ahead tirelessly.
