In the short time Albert and Hayes had spent talking with the snakes inside the tree, Yannie had already gained a collection of new, bloody "badges of honor" on her body.
When she first laid eyes on the grotesque twin-headed snake—with its two human-like torsos sprouting from a single serpentine body—her reaction was that of any sane person: her pupils dilated instantly, and her face contorted in uncontrollable terror. She assumed she had been snatched up simply to fill the beast's stomach, certain that her end was near.
But then, she noticed Albert and Hayes standing nearby, completely unscathed. The realization hit her—something else was going on here.
