Hayes flew into a sudden rage. His supple back arched high in midair as he took a small step back, instantly assuming a defensive stance.

"Get lost! Who told you to run over here? Trying to die and drag us down with you?!"

Hayes was practically furious enough to explode at Karl.

He knew there were pursuers right on his tail, yet he still ran straight toward them. Cold as it sounded, in a life-or-death situation like this, who had the luxury of worrying about anyone else?

Back in the underground ant nest, Hayes might still have felt bound by his role as an officer—still concerned for the soldiers and mutants he'd led below. But now, with only Albert at his side, charging into a mountain cave alone, there were far fewer things he needed to care about.

Even Karl's so-called big brother snake had already had his mind hijacked by something and turned on his own people. Were they supposed to be more capable than that enormous two-headed serpent?
