Chapter 13 - Blood of the Hunt

Aria

The forest was alive with whispers of danger, shadows twisting unnaturally around the trees. Every step I took felt like walking into a trap. My wolf coiled tightly inside me, muscles taut, claws scraping the earth. Energy thrummed along my veins, the Starborn Blood awakening with every heartbeat.

"Kael…" I whispered, voice trembling, yet resolute. "They're here. I can feel them… all of them."

He nodded, eyes scanning the dark undergrowth, silver orbs sharp as blades. "Yes. And they're waiting for a single mistake."

My pulse quickened. The rogue leader, the scouts, and the true enemy… they were orchestrating something bigger than I had imagined. The bond pulsed violently between us, alive and insistent, warning me, guiding me, and pushing me toward focus.

I took a deep breath. I've survived everything else. I can survive this.

Kael

I could feel her fear, her anticipation, and determination through the bond. My wolf mirrored hers, coiled and ready, every muscle tensed.

"This is no ordinary attack," I murmured, voice low. "They're testing us. Preparing for something bigger. The rogue leader's plan… it isn't finished."

Aria's Starborn Blood pulsed violently, energy flickering along her skin. She's powerful now, yes—but raw strength alone won't keep her alive. Precision, strategy, and control are everything.

I coiled around her instinctively, energy forming protective waves, wolf snarling softly. "Trust the bond, Aria. Trust yourself. Strike with intent. Survive."

She nodded slightly. Determination burned in her eyes. She is ready—but danger will push her to the limit tonight.

Aria POV—First Wave of the Hunt

The first wave struck without warning. Shadows lunged from the treeline, eyes glowing red in the dim moonlight. They moved with deadly precision, energy crackling like lightning.

My wolf leapt instinctively, coiling around me, claws extended. My hands glowed, energy spiraling outward in controlled bursts. Every strike, every block, every leap was calculated. The bond screamed guidance, amplifying my instinct while correcting my flaws.

Kael moved alongside me, wolf protective, energy flowing perfectly in sync with mine. Together, we struck with deadly efficiency.

One scout lunged from above—faster than I expected. I rolled, energy flaring, wolf leaping, striking him back into the shadows. The bond pulsed violently, warning me of another approaching.

They were relentless. Coordinated. Adaptive. And I could sense it: the true enemy was studying us, learning, testing our reactions.

Kael POV—The Predator Approaches

Through the bond, I could feel her growing confidence, the Starborn Blood coiling perfectly around her instincts. But the pulse of danger was stronger now—the predators were more than mere scouts. They were shadows of ancient power, feeding off fear, strength, and the bond.

I growled low, circling her, wolf coiling, energy humming violently. "Aria… stay sharp. Focus on the leader. The others are distractions."

She nodded, hands glowing brighter, wolf leaping instinctively. The bond pulsed violently, protective, guiding, insistent.

The enemy was close. Too close. I could sense the dark figure watching, waiting to strike directly, and my instincts screamed a warning. The predator has arrived.

Aria POV—The True Predator Emerges

From the shadows, a massive figure emerged—taller, broader, energy radiating like molten metal. His crimson eyes locked on me, and the forest seemed to shrink beneath his presence.

"You… have survived far too long," he hissed, voice deep and cruel. "The Starborn Blood cannot save you from what is coming."

My wolf roared, coiling, energy flaring around my hands. I could feel the bond pulsing violently, warning me of his strength. Every instinct screamed attack—but I hesitated. He was… ancient. Predatory. Unfamiliar. Dangerous.

Kael moved immediately, wolf circling, energy forming a protective wall. "Aria… now. Strike with me. Precision. Control. Power!"

I drew a deep breath, wolf leaping, energy spiraling outward, striking the predator squarely. He staggered slightly, surprise flickering across his eyes. But he recovered quickly, dark energy flaring violently in counterattack.

Kael POV—Defensive Maneuvers

I coiled around her, amplifying her strikes, energy surging, wolf protective, blocking, redirecting attacks. The predator was stronger than any enemy we had faced. Each strike we landed was met with immense force, dark energy flaring, twisting reality slightly with each clash.

I could feel him studying us, probing the bond, looking for weaknesses. But Aria… she was ready. Not fully, perhaps, but ready enough to survive.

"Do not falter, Aria!" I barked, energy coiling violently. "Focus the bond! Your wolf listens to you. Your power obeys your will!"

Her hands glowed brighter, energy coiling like fire. She surged forward, wolf leaping, strikes precise and deadly. The predator staggered again, just enough for me to shield her from a powerful counterattack.

Aria POV—Awakening New Power

Pain flared as the predator struck, dark energy grazing my shoulder. The bond screamed, wolf snarling, protective instinct surging. I will not fail!

Energy surged through me—raw, uncontrolled, but instinctively precise. The Starborn Blood responded, coiling outward, amplifying my wolf, my movements, my energy.

I roared, unleashing a new wave of power—fire-like energy that twisted and danced, striking the predator squarely. He staggered backward, dark energy flickering, but he smiled, cruel and knowing.

"You… are awakening," he hissed. "But awakening brings hunger… and the hunt is only beginning."

The words struck deep. My wolf coiled, energy humming violently. The bond pulsed wildly, protective, warning, guiding. Kael mirrored me perfectly, coiling energy and wolf instinct around me.

Kael POV—Preparing for the Hunt

The predator was retreating—but not permanently. He had tasted our strength, and now he would return, more prepared, more deadly. The scouts were only the beginning.

I glanced at Aria, chest heaving, hands glowing, wolf coiled. She is ready… but the hunt will test her beyond endurance. Beyond control. Beyond the bond itself.

"Aria," I whispered, wolf circling, energy protective. "You survived. You struck true. But this is only the first stage. The hunt… has just begun."

The bond pulsed violently between us, alive, protective, insistent. It echoed my thoughts, her strength, our unity. Together… we can survive. But the predators are far older, far more cunning, and far more relentless than anything we've faced.

Cliffhanger

The forest grew silent, the shadows dispersing like smoke in the wind. But the bond screamed warnings—the predator was far from gone, and others lurked beyond the treeline.

Kael's wolf coiled around me, energy flaring faintly, protective. My wolf mirrored him, claws sharp, fangs bared, energy humming with anticipation.

And then, in the deepest shadow, a whisper cut through the air, cold and deliberate:

"The Starborn has awakened… and now the hunt is upon you. No bond, no wolf, no strength will save you from what is coming."

The Starborn Blood pulsed violently, alive and hungry. I could feel it—this was no longer a test. Survival would demand every ounce of skill, every instinct, every bond… and perhaps more than I was ready to give.
