Chapter 12 - Chapter 11: Keeping Secrets Hidden

Carl had been keeping his eye on Lily since the case began. He had suspected that she knew more than she was letting on. He also didn't trust Mirlande, as she was the only person that could have told Lily about their world...right?

Carl had almost always done things by the book, and keeping people safe was his priority. He had made a terrible mistake a long time ago, and a young girl paid for it with her life. He had promised himself never to make a mistake like that ever again, yet he had made so many in this case already. Eight more dead, six injured, how much more carnage would he witness before this case was over?

"Hey boss," Lily said as she knocked on the door. Carl let her in, and she sat down in the chair across from him. "I know you have probably already taken me off the case, but I would like to still work here till the investigation is closed."

This surprised Carl greatly. Just two weeks ago she wanted nothing to do with this case. So much so that she immediately asked for a transfer. Now she wanted to stay until the case was closed, it didn't matter if she was on the team or not. "Why the sudden change of heart, Miss. Lily?"

"A new friend of mine was attacked while he was at the hospital visiting his little sister. I feel like I should be here for them and all the families of the girls who died in my building. For the longest time I was thinking about my own safety, that I forgot about the people around me. I want to stay, even if it is just a little longer, to make sure that they are going to be ok." She said it with more care and confidence than he had ever seen from her in the whole time she worked here. She had really grown up in the past few weeks. It was going to make his job that much harder.

"Fine...," He said. His heart knew it was the right decision, but his brain wasn't so sure. He watched how she left with Mirlande, when Regina Muller walked in. "What do you want?" He snarled. He was getting tired of the witch's incompetence.

"Some idiot had Grey deliver food to the zombi girl. She knows about us, She knows about the supernatural world!" Muller announced. Carl could tell he wasn't getting the full story, but he would deal with the infuriating witchling later. He stormed out of his office. "Wait, where are you going?" She screeched, but Carl just closed the door in front of her face.

Carl knew he could not blame Mirlande, not really. Zombis are always hungry and can't always tell when it is getting bad. It can lead them to not getting to food quick enough. That is why they have SN food service for zombis, so they didn't go into a feeding craze. When a zombi does, there is a special protocol that must be followed. There is a real threat from a turned zombie with an e at the end. They are ones that aren't created by a witch. The Zombis that are turned by a witch still have their soul, even if it isn't in their body. When a created Zombi turns a normal human into a Zombie, the person that is turned loses their soul and turns into monsters that can only eat human brains to survive. Lily's eyes were clear, which meant one of two things: She managed not to be turned and now knows the supernatural world existed, or she already ate human brains... Either way, she was a danger to both the supernatural and normal worlds.

Carl walked to the small sterile kitchen, and got out liquid mercury poisoning from a hidden corner of the shelf. It was meant as a last ditch effort to get rid of criminal intruders. Lily wouldn't even realize she was dying. Sadly the chemical that turns it into a liquid, and makes it kill a person slowly, makes it unnatural. In other words, there was going to be traces in her blood afterward.

He poured a small teaspoon into her water bottle, before leaving to check the cameras just as she came in. She took a big gulp of her water before leaving with her friend. Even though he hated the fact he was getting rid of one of the hardest workers, he knew the laws on zombies were strict. There was only one case several years ago where a zombie was allowed to live. She spent her whole life being monitored by zombis.

A few days passed and Lily was feeling sluggish, but she hid the fact that she wasn't feeling well. That's what she believed anyway. She kept up with her work with the families of the victim. She visited the hospital after various tests told her that she was non contagious. Lily thought she might have accidentally eaten something unnatural and it was messing with her healing ability. It would explain the numbness she had been dealing with all morning. It was not an unwelcome change of pace as long as it went away soon. The buzzing in her legs were starting to drive her crazy, but she couldn't shake the feeling away.

"Lils, are you ok?" Mir asked for the hundredth time that day. "You have been up and about more than normal."

"Yay, I just ate something wrong and it is sending my healing ability haywire. It should pass by the end of the week, and if it doesn't, I will go to the hospital. Preferably on the other side." Lily explained. She had learned that hospitals in the City of Nore didn't keep medical records. Not that she would tell Mir that was the main reason. As much as she loved the new city she found herself visiting, she still couldn't trust it just yet. Not until she found others like her that she could trust. "I still have no idea what I am. Are you sure there is no way to test if I am some sort of rare demon?"

"I'm sure, I am also sure that you need to get home and get some sleep. I will cover you." Mir said and pushed Lily out of the police department's main door.

Lily took her advice, and went home. As she walked she started to feel light headed. She felt utterly drained from the last few days. By the time she made it to her house, her stomach was churning and she could feel vile building up in her throat. She barely made it to a trashcan before she threw up. Her eyes went glassy as her vision spun. That night she found herself dreaming about all the times she had been killed, and it was only when she woke up did she realize she had died. Or more accurately, poisoned. Most poisons didn't work on her, so she didn't even think about it when she started feeling sick. Now, she decided, she would pay more attention when odd symptoms arose. To check if she was fully healed, she pricked herself with a sewing needle. She frowned when it took more than a second to heal, but sighed in relief when it healed completely in three seconds. While her healing was slowed, she was still healing faster than a normal human.

When she saw Carl's face when she walked in that morning perfectly healthy, she knew he was the one that had poisoned her. Sneaky gargoyle, doing anything to protect people and keep their supernatural nature a secret. She respected him for that, but he forgot to check all the facts before trying to kill her. She was shocked by that as he rarely ever made mistakes.

Carl panicked slightly when he saw Lily come in that morning. He waited for any report of a death, or someone from the normal world coming to arrest him, but it never happened. At the end of the day, Lily came to his office.

"Hey, what did you poison me with? My healing powers are still way too slow." She asked from the door after the last human agent left.

"Mercury...Aren't you a human or a zombie?" Carl asked in major confusion

"That's probably why it took so long for me to heal. As for your question," I shrugged. "If I was, it was before Mir attacked me." She smirked at the thought. "As far as I know, I am sort of a rare demon. Anyways, I have to go before Mir gets suspicious, and comes to kill you."

Carl gulped, he had forgotten about Mirlande. If she knew he tried to kill her best friend...He wouldn't survive long. She was a Zombi, one of the most dangerous beings in the supernatural world. The only ones that have any defense against them are werewolves, and he wasn't a werewolf. He was just glad that his secrets were still hidden, for now.
