Chapter 2 - Desolate World

Today is just another day like all of them before.

Getting up, hiding and trying to find food in the outer zone. That's my daily life for round about eight or nine years. There isn't anybody left who cares about me since my mother died nine years ago and I was stranded here in the outer zone.

She named me Nova and she allways called me my little sun.

Currently I can't really say I seem like a sun, because I haven't bathed for around a week and all my cloths are worn out and smell of sweat and dirt. My sweet home is a old rosty car partly covered by vines. It is very small inside, but it protects me before cold winds, the weather and other poeple.

I am often wondering myself how and why I am still alieve here, because the outer zone is a lawless zone where all other poor people like me are striving to survive.

Allthrough the government sometimes hands out food, it is a commen thing that people get killed just for a little bit of bread.

Today should be another day where the government hands out food not far away from my home. Even through the food isn't enough to survive it is better than to starve.

I leave my home early to get there quickly so I can maybe get a good spot in the line.

The weather is cold and windy as always and the environment is also in ruins and overgrown plants, because literally nobody cares if there is a clean road or not.

Silently I walk through the former city. Here was once a prosperous city before the first wave hit earth and more than ninty percent of earth's population died by it.

My mother told me stories what happend thirty five years ago.

Back then,

first people disappeared and couldn't be found anywhere, like they didn't even existed.

Before disappearing some people had strange symptoms like fainting out of nowhere or having high blood pressure values where normal humans would have been dead long ago.

The ones who came back after days of being missed had inhuman abilities and also told others about a new world with huge animals and creatures out of fantasies. And overall they could transform into their respective animal forms.

Next came the rifts where these creatures of the other world travelled to our world and rampaged in human territories.

That's the reason why humanity build big citys with big walls and a security force who keeps us citizens safe and punishes criminals.

All through they don't interfere with the law out here, they still keep us safe from outer dangers and that is still better than being consumed by monsters.

The former road I am walking along is still frozen and I have to be careful not to slip, because it is so slippery on the frozen ground.

This isn't the only thing slowing me down, because I hear from time to time other people coming near me and I allways hide in a covering and hope they don't notice me.

Even through it is cold as hell, I have to endure it, because I convince myself all the time that it will get better and all the enduring is worth it.

Turning around a corner I see in the distance a long line of people standing before armored trucks and people in protective suit giving out food rations.

Normally most of these people in line would just slaughter each other for this little food, but all of them know that they haven't any chance against guards with their high technology and strength. So they obendiently wait for their turn and don't make a scene.

What a pretens of showing charity and really caring for each other.

If these forces leave, the only human thing that will stay is their greed and egoistic nature.

Survival is only for the strongest.
