My hands shake as I slowly back away, every instinct screaming at me to run, to escape. But even as they remain frozen, their eyes follow me with every step I take.
I swallow hard, my heart twisting painfully in my chest when I notice subtle movements.
Their mouths are slowly parting, revealing their fangs.
My heart sinks to the bottom pit of my stomach, and before I can make a run for it, all hell breaks loose.
A servant flings away her tray of wine, lunging at me. Her nails scrape through the air as she tries to claw at me, hissing. I dodge instinctively, my skirts tangling around my legs. Then my foot catches a fold of fabric and I slip and fall, hitting the floor.
Pain flares up my arms but that's the least of my concern.
My eyes dart around as they converge from all directions, hissing, baring their teeth. My heart hammers so violently I swear it could burst through my ribs.
Tears start to gather in my eyes as I realize this is it.
